Comedian and television host Bill Maher stunned audiences by calling out the American media for ignoring what he described as a systematic genocide of Christians in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
On his HBO program \u201cReal Time,\u201d Maher broke away from his usual left-leaning critiques and directly confronted the silence surrounding Nigeria\u2019s deadly persecution of Christians. His remarks have sparked new attention to a crisis that global watchdogs have long been warning about.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on in Nigeria, your media sources suck,\u201d Maher said. \u201cYou are in a bubble. And, again, I\u2019m not a Christian, but they are systematically killing the Christians in Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n
Maher cited shocking figures, stating that over 100,000 Christians have been killed since 2009 and 18,000 churches have been burned. \u201cThis is so much more of a genocide attempt than what is going on in Gaza. They are literally attempting to wipe out the Christian population of an entire country,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n
The statement from a liberal comedian is remarkable. For years, conservatives have raised alarms about the persecution of Christians worldwide, often met with dismissal by mainstream outlets. Maher\u2019s acknowledgment validates what faith groups and human rights organizations have been saying all along.<\/p>\n
Nigeria, Africa\u2019s most populous nation, has become the deadliest country in the world for Christians, according to groups such as Open Doors. More believers are killed there than in every other country combined.<\/p>\n
In just the first seven months of 2025, radical Islamic groups killed more than 7,000 Christians in Nigeria. An additional 7,800 were kidnapped, according to the International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law. That amounts to about 30 killed and 35 kidnapped every single day.<\/p>\n
Despite these staggering numbers, American and European media remain largely silent. Maher called out this double standard, asking: \u201cWhere are the kids protesting this?\u201d His question underscored the selective outrage often seen among progressive activists.<\/p>\n
U.S. Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina appeared on Maher\u2019s panel and agreed with his critique. She thanked him for raising the issue, noting that the media has utterly failed to cover the crisis.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has urged the State Department to designate Nigeria as a \u201cCountry of Particular Concern.\u201d Yet the Biden-era foreign policy establishment had been reluctant to act. Now, under President Trump, conservatives are demanding stronger action to hold Nigeria accountable and to protect vulnerable Christian communities.<\/p>\n
Radical groups including Boko Haram, Fulani militants, and Islamic State West Africa Province have waged a relentless campaign of terror against Christians. Entire villages have been wiped out, churches burned, and pastors targeted for assassination.<\/p>\n
The CIA World Factbook notes that Christians make up nearly half of Nigeria\u2019s population. Once, violence was confined mostly to the Muslim-dominated north. Today, it has spread south and threatens the heart of the country.<\/p>\n
Nigeria\u2019s government has repeatedly failed to protect Christians, fueling the influence of Islamist groups. Open Doors warns that this inaction allows extremists to expand their reach unchallenged.<\/p>\n
The carnage is not abstract. Farmers are slaughtered in their fields, families are torn apart, and children are abducted in mass kidnappings. Ransom and forced conversions are common, leaving survivors traumatized and communities shattered.<\/p>\n
The World Watch List for 2025 ranks Nigeria among the worst nations for Christians. Nearly 70 percent of Christians killed worldwide last year were Nigerian. The report described the level of anti-Christian violence as \u201cthe maximum possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Conservatives have long argued that the West\u2019s silence enables these atrocities. Bill Maher, though no conservative, has now confirmed that the issue has been deliberately ignored by media elites.<\/p>\n
His blunt remarks may have opened a crack in the wall of silence. If even a liberal comedian is willing to say what conservatives have been shouting for years, perhaps more Americans will finally pay attention.<\/p>\n
Critics of the media point out that left-leaning outlets fixate on narratives that fit their worldview. Yet when it comes to the slaughter of Christians by Islamist radicals, the cameras are turned off.<\/p>\n
The contrast is glaring. Progressive activists organize endless demonstrations over Gaza, climate change, and identity politics. But when thousands of Christians are murdered in Africa, their voices fall silent.<\/p>\n
This selective outrage reveals a dangerous bias. It devalues Christian lives and ignores the global reality of religious persecution.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a new jihadist faction called Lakurawa has emerged in northwestern Nigeria, armed with advanced weapons and tied to al-Qaeda affiliates in Mali. Their expansion signals that the crisis is worsening, not improving.<\/p>\n
Experts warn that if unchecked, Nigeria could destabilize the entire region. Its size, population, and resources make it a linchpin for Africa. A collapse there would have devastating global consequences.<\/p>\n
Yet despite the gravity of the situation, Western leaders and media continue to look the other way. Bill Maher\u2019s candid intervention has broken the silence, but lasting change will require sustained pressure.<\/p>\n

The southbound lanes of Knight Street have been shut down after a commercial truck hit an overpass in Richmond, B.C., on Friday.<\/p>\n
A statement from RCMP said the truck hit the Cambie Road overpass, just south of the Knight Street Bridge,\u00a0around 7:15 a.m. PT. The road closures will continue while officials confirm whether the overpass is stable.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe do not have any timelines at the moment, but we are sympathetic to travellers. We strongly suggest re-routing,\u201d RCMP said.<\/p>\n
The City of Richmond said the highway falls under provincial jurisdiction, but city teams are looking at the overpass.<\/p>\n
\u201cCity staff are working to undertake a structural examination of the bridge to ensure it is safe for traffic. That will occur throughout the day, and we hope to reopen the overpass as quickly as possible,\u201d said a statement from the City of Richmond.<\/p>\n
By mid-morning, the bed of the truck was still resting against the overpass. RCMP said they could not comment on whether the cab separated from the bed in the crash or whether it had been towed away.<\/p>\n
Cpl. Dennis Hwang\u00a0initially said the driver was\u00a0co-operating with investigators.<\/p>\n
But in a news release\u00a0sent out at 3:30 p.m. PT by Richmond RCMP, Hwang\u00a0said the driver of the commercial vehicle was not co-operating with them.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was determined that a commercial vehicle was towing a dump trailer in the raised position and it failed to clear the overpass,\u201d Hwang said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe commercial vehicle was located some distance away as it was severed from the trailer unit.\u201d<\/p>\n
RCMP said no injuries were reported and the Richmond Road Safety Unit has taken over the investigation.<\/p>\n
The RSU\u00a0will be working with B.C.\u2019s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to conduct engineering and structural assessments of the Knight Street bridge deck, Cambie Road overpass and other nearby areas.<\/p>\n
The collision\u00a0is\u00a0one of many incidents involving trucks hitting overpasses in the last year.<\/p>\n
A string of overpass collisions in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley last summer led to\u00a0truckers raising safety concerns in the region.<\/p>\n
Last July, a crash at\u00a0the\u00a0Highway 1 overpass in Langley, B.C., became\u00a0the eighth incidence\u00a0of trucks carrying over-height loads striking overhead bridges, the province\u2019s Transportation Ministry reported.<\/p>\n
The B.C. Trucking Association said\u00a0driver error does contribute\u00a0to overpass collisions, but said the province needs to do more to improve highway infrastructure.<\/p>\n
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) \u2013 A crash involving an overturned dump truck has closed multiple westbound lanes of US 90B on the Crescent City Connection Bridge.<\/p>\n
The crash happened sometime before noon. Three lanes were closed initially. All westbound lanes were closed for about two hours and 45 minutes.<\/p>\n
All lanes were reopened around 3 p.m.<\/p>\n
Traffic was also backed up on Clearview Pkwy in Metairie approaching the Huey P. Long Bridge with drivers using the bridge as an alternate route.<\/p>\n
Louisiana State Police are investigating the crash. Minor injuries were reported.<\/p>\n
