The\u00a0New York Jets\u00a0might not be done shipping off key pieces to the puzzle.<\/p>\n
Brad Gagnon\u00a0of Bleacher Report revealed each team\u2019s \u201cMost Valuable Offseason Trade Chip\u201d in a column. For the Jets, he listed defensive tackle\u00a0Harrison Phillips.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey may have something in the younger and less expensive\u00a0Jowon Briggs, and it makes sense to address the interior defensive line in the draft. Phillips has a good track record, but he would have more value with a 2026 contender in his age-30 contract year,\u201d Gagnon explained.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0NFL\u00a0trade deadline has already passed for the 2025 season. The next time teams can officially execute trades is in March after the start of the new league year.<\/p>\n
Phillips, 29, will turn 30 before the start of the 2026 season. He is closer to the end than he is to the beginning of his career.<\/p>\n
If he has desires of playing for a contender, it is more likely than not he will find that outside of the Jets building. The green and white are 2-8 and have no short or long-term QB answer on the roster.<\/p>\n
Perhaps that\u2019ll change during the offseason with some\u00a0splashy trade, free agent signing, or draft pick, but right now that is a big unanswered question. If you don\u2019t have a quarterback, you can\u2019t compete in the NFL.<\/p>\n
Briggs, 24, will turn 25 before the start of the 2026 season. He has been impressive this season for the Jets since being acquired from the\u00a0Cleveland Browns.<\/p>\n
However, we don\u2019t know if\u00a0Steve Wilks\u00a0is going to keep his job as defensive coordinator. So we don\u2019t know what defensive scheme the Jets will be running: 3-4? 4-3? The answer to that question could indicate how big a need defensive tackle is for the Jets.<\/p>\n
Right before the start of the 2025 season, the Jets\u00a0struck a trade\u00a0with the\u00a0Minnesota Vikings\u00a0to acquire Phillips.<\/p>\n
Phillips had signed a two-year\u00a0$15 million\u00a0contract. If the Jets wanted to cut Phillips after this season, there is an out built into the contract. They could part ways without taking on any dead cap for that decision, per Spotrac.<\/p>\n
However, his $7.5 million cap hit for 2026 is super reasonable. According to\u00a0Over The Cap, Phillips\u2019 $7.5 million annual salary ranks 38th among the highest-paid defensive tackles in football.<\/p>\n
In other words, the Jets shouldn\u2019t be in any rush to dump Phillips. He has been a good player for the Jets and has stepped up to fill the leadership void\u00a0left by\u00a0Quinnen Williams, who\u00a0was traded to the\u00a0Dallas Cowboys.<\/p>\n
The former Stanford product has started in all 10 games for the Jets this season.<\/p>\n
In his eight-year NFL career, he\u00a0has appeared\u00a0in 106 games. With those opportunities, Phillips has collected 8.5 sacks, 30 quarterback hits, 17 tackles for loss, 11 pass deflections, two forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, and has 344 tackles.<\/p>\n
I spoke with\u00a0Buffalo Bills\u00a0analyst\u00a0Anthony Prohaska\u00a0on \u201cThe Manchild Show with Boy Green Digital.\u201d After the Phillips trade, Prohaska told me that Phillips will never be a true No. 1 defensive tackle, but he can be that consistent No. 2 guy forever.<\/p>\n
Phillips spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Bills in western New York.<\/p>\n
The New York Jets are in a tough spot with running back Breece Hall right now.<\/p>\n
Hall was a trade chip at the trade deadline because of his expiring contract, but the Jets opted against moving him as it seems like they’ll attempt to re-sign him in the offseason. But there’s a chance the Jets lose him in free agency and would need to replace him in the upcoming offseason.<\/p>\n
FOX Sports’ Rob Rang recently\u00a0put together a mock draft\u00a0for the 2026 NFL Draft. In this mock draft, Rang projected the Jets would use the No. 30 pick to select Miami running back Mark Fletcher. The Jets acquired the No. 30 pick from the Indianapolis Colts in the trade for Sauce Gardner.<\/p>\n
“While the focus is understandably dedicated to the Jets\u2019 looming decision at quarterback, it seems nearly as likely that the club will also be seeking a new running back, with\u00a0Breece Hall\u00a0in the midst of the final year of his rookie contract,” Rang wrote. “Hall is a talented back \u2014 and is still just 24 years-old \u2014 but the Jets were likely expecting multiple 1,0000-yard rushing seasons from him when they selected him No. 36 overall four years ago, and he has failed to deliver even one of them thus far.<\/p>\n
“The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Fletcher is a bigger, burlier back than Hall and might offer more of the grit between the tackles Glenn and Engstrand were accustomed to with the\u00a0Detroit Lions.”<\/p>\n
The Jets will likely make a big effort to retain Hall this offseason. That’s seemingly the reason they opted to hold onto him at the trade deadline.<\/p>\n
But if they can’t retain him, drafting a running back like Fletcher would make a lot of sense. Fletcher has a nose for the end zone, as he’s scored 23 touchdowns over three seasons. He’s scored nine times already this year.<\/p>\n
He’s averaging over five yards per carry this season. There’s a chance he plays himself into the first round and the Jets could be the perfect fit with their second pick in the first round.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
