The local family was out and about on a pleasant evening when they came across the kid.<\/p>\n <\/strong><\/p>\n The family decided to contact the animal welfare group The Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT), and representatives arrived to take a look. The group determined after much research that the animal in question was a fishing cat, a unique kind of cat that is critically endangered. This \u2018wild cat\u2019 can get twice as big as a domestic cat and loves all things aquatic. The cat got its name because it enjoys fishing and hunting so much.<\/p>\n According to Wikipedia,\u00a0\u201cthe fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) is a medium-sized wild cat of South and Southeast Asia.<\/strong>\u00a0Since 2016, it is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Fishing cat populations are threatened by destruction of wetlands and declined severely over the last decade. Fishing cats live foremost in the vicinity of wetlands, along rivers, streams, oxbow lakes, in swamps and mangroves.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/strong><\/p>\n The kitten was only a few hours old when he was found by the family, as was determined by WFFT. The organization\u2019s experts were perplexed by the mother\u2019s apparent willingness to forsake her newborn. The family decided they liked the uncommon cat and asked to try keeping it for a while. So they named him Simba. The cat obviously cared deeply for its human family.<\/p>\n The family was always on the lookout, certain that the kitten\u2019s mother would soon arrive to care for her young. It\u2019s too bad that never materialized. The family decided to breastfeed Simba, and he turned out to be a stunning fisherman. Thankfully, Simba seems to be doing fine for the time being, but his continued health and happiness is crucial. As is customary for the jump, her leap was captured on camera. The\u00a0footage\u00a0shows her arms outstretched, falling gracefully \u2014 until, in a split second, the cord snaps.<\/p>\n Plummeting into the Zambezi, notorious for its strong currents and crocodile population, Erin hit the\u00a0water\u00a0hard, and the broken cord still bound her feet together.<\/p>\n \u201cIt felt amazing at first,\u201d Erin later said, per\u00a0The Guardian. \u201cThen I felt a jolt across my chest, like I slowed down for a second\u2026 and suddenly I hit the water. That\u2019s when I realised something had gone seriously wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n Knocked unconscious for a moment by the impact, Erin came to underwater, her lungs burning, disoriented and struggling to work out which way was up. \u201cAs I went deeper, the water got colder; I think that snapped me out of it,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n To make matters worse, the bungee cord tangled in rocks and debris as she was swept through the rapids. With immense effort, she managed to dive under and free it more than once. Despite severe bruising and internal trauma, she swam through the fast-flowing river and made it to the Zimbabwean side, where a staff member helped her to safety.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019d seen crocodiles that morning,\u201d she later said, \u201cbut I couldn\u2019t even think about that. I was coughing up blood and struggling to breathe. My lungs were on fire.\u201d<\/p>\n She credits her instinctive outstretched arms during the fall for saving her from a head-first impact and likely unconsciousness.<\/p>\n Erin was taken to a nearby\u00a0hospital\u00a0in Victoria Falls where she was put on a ventilator, underwent scans and was treated for partially collapsed lungs and potential infections from the dirty river water. \u201cI had ingested a lot of water, so they gave me strong antibiotics,\u201d she said of her stay in the hospital. \u201cBut miraculously, there were no broken bones.\u201d<\/p>\n Despite the trauma, Erin was philosophical about the incident. \u201cThe bungee team were incredibly apologetic.
