Chicago\u2019s police oversight agency (COPA) has released bodycam video of the\u00a0fatal shooting of a man\u00a0who officers chased to\u00a0northwest Indiana\u00a0last month.<\/p>\n
The backstory:<\/p>\n
Chicago police officers responded on May 8, around 5:49 p.m., to a report of a person with a gun in the 13400 block of South Baltimore Avenue, where they located a suspect wanted in connection with an aggravated battery case.<\/p>\n
The bodycam video\u2014released on Tuesday\u2014shows officers during a traffic stop in Hegewisch trying to get the suspect to exit a vehicle. When the man doesn\u2019t comply, officers then break the car\u2019s driveside window, which is when he speeds off.<\/p>\n
The chase ended in Hammond, Indiana, where the man crashed the vehicle near Dearborn and Gostlin streets. Bodycam video shows officers running up to the man who, at that point, had gotten out of the car and was standing in a nearby field. Chicago police and COPA say the man fired shots at officers, which is when the video shows two officers opening fire on him.<\/p>\n
The man was taken to St. Catherine Hospital, where he died. He was identified as 50-year-old Joseph Navarro.<\/p>\n
The two officers were taken to a hospital for observation and were reported to be in good condition. No other injuries were reported, and a gun was recovered at the scene.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s next:<\/p>\n
The Chicago Police Department\u2019s Investigative Response Team was assisting Hammond police with the investigation.<\/p>\n
COPA is investigating the shooting. The officers involved were placed on administrative duties for at least 30 days, per department policy.<\/p>\n

She gave birth to two gorgeous children, Jamie and Emily, two minutes later. Sadly, the doctor informed them that Jamie did not survive despite their best efforts to save him. The shocked parents were unable to accept this.<\/p>\n
The events that followed were truly remarkable! As Jamie was in his mother\u2019s arms, he began to move and breathe more vigorously, demonstrating that he was trying to fight for his life despite having just been born. The doctors were taken aback, but they swiftly came together and decided to help the family. Doctors and Jamie\u2019s parents worked together to save him, and they were successful!<\/p>\n
Jamie is a very loved and content 7-year-old. He particularly likes to tell his friends that he was long dead and then came back to life. His new friends are probably curious to know what occurred!<\/p>\n
She explained that she and her husband had been trying to conceive for years, so she couldn\u2019t just give up on Jamie so easily. She and her husband took off their t-shirts to keep Jamie warm.<\/p>\n
Kate is aware that the physicians might have dismissed the idea as absurd if they had thought the infant had already passed away with little prospect of survival. But, Kate\u2019s decision was without a doubt the best one she had ever taken!<\/p>\n
Kate allegedly noticed her child begin to breathe deeply at one point. When they realized Jamie had a good chance of recovering, he finally opened his eyes and began breathing. The parents are overjoyed that their children choose to believe in and follow their instincts.<\/p>\n
When the twins, then five years old, first heard this tale, Emily sobbed as she realized how much her brother had to go through. The twins are happy to live together forever and have gotten along much better since then. They play together constantly.<\/p>\n
This family tale encourages us to always act in accordance with our moral convictions. It is important to try, even if we occasionally fail so that we won\u2019t look back and wish we had done more in a particular situation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
