Afew weeks after the New York Jets shipped off Quinnen Williams, he finally made his debut for the Dallas Cowboys in Week 11.<\/p>\n
It was worth the wait.<\/p>\n
Williams delivered a career performance for America\u2019s Team.<\/p>\n
According to the official\u00a0NFL Plus account, Williams finished with 1.5 sacks and a \u201ccareer high\u201d five quarterback hits.<\/p>\n
Not only was that a career performance from Williams, but it was also something the Cowboys haven\u2019t seen in at least seven years.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn his Cowboys debut, Quinnen Williams forced 5 pressures in the first half, tied for the most in any half by a Cowboys defensive tackle since at least 2018. Williams and Osa Odighizuwa combined for 11 pressures on the night,\u201d per Next Gen Stats.<\/p>\n
Dallas beat the\u00a0Las Vegas Raiders\u00a033-16 on\u00a0Monday Night Football\u00a0to cap off Week 11. The Cowboys improved to 4-5-1 on the season to keep their playoff hopes alive.<\/p>\n
Everyone in the world is obsessed with the black and white results. Who are the winners? Who are the losers? This or that. However, sometimes there is gray. In this case, perhaps the Jets didn\u2019t just win and the Cowboys lost. What if, brace yourself, they both won the trade?<\/p>\n
The green and white are clearly in rebuild mode. The task for the team is simple in principle but more difficult to execute: find the next franchise quarterback. Trading away Williams, a superstar, provided them with assets to try and accomplish that mission.<\/p>\n
On the other side of the coin, the Cowboys are all in. They have paid their top stars big money: quarterback\u00a0Dak Prescott\u00a0($60 million\u00a0per year), wide receiver\u00a0CeeDee Lamb\u00a0($34 million\u00a0per year), and offensive lineman\u00a0Tyler Smith\u00a0($24 million\u00a0per year), to name a few.<\/p>\n
The Cowboys are headed in the opposite direction. They are trying to win, and they have the talent to do it right now.<\/p>\n
Just because Williams looked awesome in his debut doesn\u2019t mean the Jets made the wrong choice. Just like if we fast-forward in time and the Jets\u2019 picks work out, that doesn\u2019t mean Dallas blew it either.<\/p>\n

Things weren\u2019t going well for the Jets. As a team, they weren\u2019t winning football games. Some of their best players weren\u2019t playing up to par.<\/p>\n
In eight games with the Jets this season, Williams\u00a0had only one sack and three quarterback hits.<\/p>\n
In just one game with the Cowboys, he finished with more sacks (1.5) and quarterback hits (five) than he had all of this year with the Jets.<\/p>\n
Williams admitted during\u00a0his introductory presser\u00a0with the Cowboys that the losing in New York got to him. After being traded to Dallas, he was reinvigorated, and it was on full display on the football field.<\/p>\n
For those suggesting that Williams, at 27 years of age, was washed, the demise of the former Alabama product was greatly exaggerated.<\/p>\n
He was named a first-team All-Pro in 2022. Williams showed flashes of that same level of dominance on Monday, November 17.<\/p>\n
Minnesota Wild Hockey is back, baby! It’s good again.\u00a0Awoouu (wild Howl)<\/p>\n
Don’t look now, but the Wild are back to the playoff bubble. After a slow start in which they didn’t look like their usual, structured selves, Minnesota has ripped off four wins in their past five games and picked up a loser point for their only defeat. The team has now leapfrogged the Utah Mammoth in the standings and is in a logjam for sixth through tenth place with the Edmonton Oilers, Vegas Golden Knights, Winnipeg Jets, and Chicago Blackhawks.<\/p>\n
How did they do it? Come on. How do the Wild win any games, historically?<\/p>\n
Low-event hockey.<\/p>\n
After a five-goal explosion in Long Island sparked this run, there have been a total of 12 goals scored in the first four games of Minnesota’s current homestand. After\u00a0completely losing their structure\u00a0for most of the first month of the season, the Wild are clearly back to playing John Hynes Hockey.<\/p>\n
We can give a lot of credit to\u00a0Jesper Wallstedt\u00a0and\u00a0Filip Gustavsson\u00a0— and we should — but their combined .955 save percentage over the past five games doesn’t happen in a vacuum. For the first time this season, the defense is making things easy for the goaltenders. Through November 6, the Wild were allowing 3.07 expected goals per hour at 5-on-5, ranking 28th in the NHL. In these last five games, they’ve chopped off over a full expected goal per hour, leading the NHL with 1.99 expected goals allowed per hour.<\/p>\n
That’s\u00a0<\/em>what you expect to see from this team. The Wild were third in the NHL last season in expected goals allowed per hour (2.28), and haven’t finished lower than third since 2020-21 (and they were fifth). They are an elite defensive club, and they’re on their way to re-establishing that.<\/p>\n The biggest reason, at least during this stretch, is that their defensive engines are playing elite defense again.\u00a0Jared Spurgeon\u00a0spent a lot of time early in the season struggling, whether with rookie\u00a0Zeev Buium\u00a0or longtime defensive partner\u00a0Jake Middleton. It looked like the\u00a0beginning of the end\u00a0of his long career as the anchor of the Wild blueline.\u00a0Jonas Brodin\u00a0looked rusty after\u00a0offseason surgery, exacerbating the team’s struggles.<\/p>\n Spurgeon has found his groove, and Brodin’s back to locking things down, both allowing under two expected goals per hour over this stretch. We’re seeing similar things from the Wild’s best defensive forwards.\u00a0Joel Eriksson Ek\u00a0and\u00a0Marcus Foligno\u00a0are players who should always be part of the Selke Trophy discussion, but both were allowing over 3.0 expected goals per hour at 5-on-5 as of November 6. They’ve also tightened things up, with Foligno allowing 1.5 xG per hour at 5-on-5 in the past five games.<\/p>\n Those four players are so crucial to the Wild’s system, and we can see the trickle-down effect of their regained defensive dominance.\u00a0Brock Faber\u00a0isn’t struggling anymore, and that includes when he’s in his own zone. Eriksson Ek is now dominating play with\u00a0Matt Boldy\u00a0and\u00a0Marcus Johansson, finally giving Minnesota a semblance of a second punch. Foligno setting the tone on the fourth line has sparked\u00a0Yakov Trenin\u00a0and\u00a0Danila Yurov in their own zone.<\/p>\n Speaking of Yurov, there’s a second part to the Wild’s improved team defense:\u00a0the rookies are finally settling in. Yurov’s offensive numbers (two goals, an assist in 19 games) aren’t anything to write home about, but his two-way play was a strength in the KHL, and his strong defensive play of late should keep him in the lineup. Buium is improving in his own zone, even if he still lags behind the pack on the defensive side of the ice. The team’s\u00a0Wild Card,\u00a0David Ji\u0159\u00ed\u010dek, has been out of the lineup in favor of the\u00a0stability\u00a0Daemon Hunt\u00a0provides.<\/p>\n All together, that adds up to a Wild team that looks much more like a Wild team. Just in time. We’re closing in on Thanksgiving, the\u00a0unofficial start date\u00a0for determining who the NHL’s playoff contenders or pretenders are. As recently as\u00a0November 6, the Wild were stuck in the cellar, tied with the San Jose Sharks for 13th place in the Western Conference and three points back of the bubble. Now they’re in position to be in a playoff spot come Turkey Day.<\/p>\n It’s not going to be fun for the\u00a0Team of 17,095\u00a0to watch — reflected in not being the “Team of 18,001” this season — but it doesn’t have to be. At least, not now. Minnesota proved over the first stretch of the season that they can’t “out-skill” other teams, and\u00a0Marco Rossi\u00a0being\u00a0week-to-week\u00a0with a lower-body injury definitely doesn’t change that dynamic. While fans surely hoped that freed-up cap space and new blood would finally change the team’s DNA, that\u00a0hasn’t manifested\u00a0through the first quarter of the season.<\/p>\n Something will need to change that, at least, if the Wild want to finally break out of the first round. But in the meantime, this is what they need to do to win right now: play dull, boring, low-event hockey. It’s not stellar, and it’s not often the blueprint for a deep playoff run, but it might just save the season.
