In the Dominican Republic, an investigation has been in progress since more than 200 people were killed when the roof of a nightclub collapsed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At least 300 partygoers and employees, including two former Major League Baseball players, were impacted when the roof of the Jet Set club in Santo Domingo collapsed in early April of this year.<\/p>\n

That particular night, Rubby P\u00e9rez was on stage. Unfortunately, the beloved Dominican merengue singer also perished in the incident.<\/p>\n

Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, the club\u2019s proprietors, were arrested and placed under arrest on June 12 after the Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office conducted an inquiry into the case.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0New York Times, both have been charged with involuntary homicide.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth defendants displayed immense irresponsibility and negligence by failing to physically intervene to prevent the club\u2019s roof from collapsing, as it ultimately did, causing 236 deaths and more than 180 injuries,\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0the Attorney General\u2019s Office of the Dominican Republic said in a statement regarding their detention.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Dominican Today, the club\u2019s renovations were carried out\u00a0\u201cwithout obtaining the required permits or conducting the necessary structural assessments from the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) or the Mayor\u2019s Office of the National District.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prosecutors claimed that these modifications showed\u00a0\u201ca complete disregard for building and safety laws.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

They also stated,\u00a0\u201cA key column in the structure was subsequently removed, significantly affecting the roof\u2019s stability, without any professional assessment or permit to support the modification, demonstrating high-risk behaviour.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heavy elements were also said to have overloaded the Jet Set Club\u2019s roof.<\/p>\n

The Espaillats allegedly knew of the building\u2019s structural problems\u00a0\u201cthrough visual reports (photos and videos) and communications from their employees,\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0yet they decided to overlook the difficulties.<\/p>\n

Given all of this, the Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office has maintained that if the defendants had followed the law and put life before money, the events of April 8\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cwould have been entirely avoidable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

prosecutors continued:\u00a0\u201cThe defendant, Maribel Espaillat, was aware of a falling debris incident hours before the collapse and in response to a request to suspend the activity, refused to do so, citing the absence of the defendant Antonio Espaillat L\u00f3pez and the impossibility of stopping the party, prioritising economic gain over the safety and lives of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sand around the western city of El Fasher is now stained red with pools of blood so thick they can be seen from space.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The satellite images also captured piles of bodies, of mainly women and children, who were tragically targeted during the two-day ethnic purge after the city\u00a0fell to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).<\/p>\n

Following more than 18 months of brutal siege warfare, the group gained control over every state capital in the cast Darfur region.<\/p>\n

Allies of the army, the Joint Forces, said on Tuesday that the RSF ‘committed heinous crimes against innocent civilians, where more than 2,000 unarmed citizens were executed and killed on October 26 and 27, most of them women, children and the elderly’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The total death toll could not immediately be confirmed, but the shocking satellite images taken after the fall of El Fasher showed evidence of the mass killings.<\/p>\n

Body-sized objects were seen in the satellite images clustered around vehicles and nearby an RSF sand berm built around the city. There have been reports of civilians being gunned down as they attempted to break out and flee the bloodshed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Analysis by the Yale School of Public Health Humanitarian Research Lab (HRL), which has been tracking the siege using open source images and satellite imagery, found clusters of objects ‘consistent with the size of human bodies’ and ‘reddish ground discolouration’ thought to be either blood or disturbed soil.\u00a0<\/p>\n
