Cincinnati Bengals\u00a0wide receiver\u00a0Ja\u2019Marr Chase\u00a0appeared to spit toward\u00a0Pittsburgh Steelers\u00a0defensive back\u00a0Jalen Ramsey during the fourth quarter of Sunday\u2019s 34\u201312 loss, according to video circulating online.<\/p>\n
Ramsey was ejected for throwing a punch, and afterward he claimed Chase had spat on him\u2014a claim Chase denied in his own postgame comments. Both players received penalties on the play.<\/p>\n
According to CBS Sports\u2019 Jonathan Jones, the\u00a0NFL\u00a0plans to investigate the incident. A similar situation occurred in Week 1, when video showed\u00a0Philadelphia Eagles\u00a0lineman\u00a0Jalen Carter\u00a0spitting toward\u00a0Dallas Cowboys\u00a0quarterback\u00a0Dak Prescott\u00a0in the very early moments of the game. Carter\u2019s ejection counted as his suspension, and he was later fined $57,222.<\/p>\n
Because Sunday\u2019s incident happened with 12 minutes remaining, it\u2019s unclear whether Chase could face a suspension, a fine, or both. And same goes for Ramsey.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith the ejection, (Ramsey) should get fined,\u201d\u00a0Jones said for CBS Sports. \u201cBut if they determine that he was not the aggressor but in fact he was reacting to being spit upon, I would anticipate that (Ramsey) would not get fined. And instead, Chase would be suspended for a game. Because they set the precedent with (Carter) in Week 1.\u201d<\/p>\n
Head official Bill Vinovich\u00a0told pool reporter Brian Batko postgame\u00a0that the crew did not see Chase spit on Ramsey.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was a scuffle between the two,\u201d Vinovich said. \u201cWe had been dealing with it all day and then it kind of escalated. They were both grabbing each other\u2019s facemasks.\u201d<\/p>\n
The referee said a clear punch was observed and therefore a disqualification was issued.<\/p>\n
Vinovich was asked if he saw Chase spit on Ramsey and he said, \u201cNo. Obviously, we did not. We did not see anything that rose to that level at all.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s unclear what video was available to the officiating crew during the game. The field level high definition view showing Chase spitting wasn\u2019t available online until well after the final whistle.<\/p>\n
Losing Chase for a game really has more fantasy football implications than anything after the Bengals have fallen to 3-7 on the season after losing quarterback\u00a0Joe Burrow\u00a0to injury in Week 2. Next week, they host the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC, the\u00a0New England Patriots\u00a0(9-2).<\/p>\n
Chase, who set a Bengals record with 16 receptions in the Week 7 win over Pittsburgh, was held to just three catches for 30 yards this time. The Bengals really had nothing going against the Steeler defense, which is much improved in recent weeks.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou feel all the losses. They all eat at you,\u201d head coach Zac Taylor said postgame. \u201cWe\u2019re working like crazy to make sure that this doesn\u2019t happen. It happened today \u2013 it\u2019s disappointing. Our option is to come back tomorrow and keep fighting and find a way to get a win. We\u2019ve got a red-hot team coming in here (in New England), and so that\u2019s what we\u2019re going to do. We\u2019re going to do everything we can to clean this up, correct the mistakes, get back to work and fight another week, and find a way to get a win.\u201d<\/p>\n
The\u00a0Minnesota Wild\u00a0(8-7-4) is back on home ice tonight to host the\u00a0Vegas Golden Knights\u00a0(8-4-5).\u00a0\u00a0The Wild will be without forward Vladimir Tarasenko for the second straight game.<\/p>\n
Tarasenko, 33, has two goals and ten points in 18 games this year for the Wild.\u00a0He missed Saturday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks\u00a0with a lower-body injury and will not play again on Sunday.<\/p>\n
