The biggest buy-in event of the 2025 WSOP started today, but if you were expecting glitz and glamor, you\u2019d have been sorely disappointed.<\/p>\n
The Super High Roller started life in the corner of the Paris Ballroom, and if you didn\u2019t know who these players were, or you didn\u2019t see the $250,000 buy-in on the tournament screen, you might\u2019ve walked right past them without a second glance.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Starting stacks of 1.5 million meant these players were 500 big blinds deep at the start, and with one re-entry and late registration open until 2.15pm tomorrow,\u00a0this is a ride that won\u2019t really get wild until tomorrow.<\/p>\n
Santhosh Suvarna\u00a0won this event last year, for a monster score of $5,415,152. He was back today for a potential back-to-back.\u00a0Daniel Negreanu\u00a0turned up about 4.30pm and went to work.\u00a0Martin Kabrhel\u00a0followed him in. If anyone can create energy in a room, it\u2019s him.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Even to these players, a $250,000 buy-in isn\u2019t trivial. For\u00a0Jesse Lonis, one of the very best players in the world, it marked his highest buy-in ever. He went in thinking he was going to win it.<\/p>\n
Across the hall, one of the smallest buy-ins of the series was playing. The $500 Salute to Warriors had a smaller rail but a much bigger field, with 3,937 players all dreaming of winning the same bracelet that would be awarded to the winner of the Super High Roller. It\u2019s the beauty of the WSOP. There\u2019s something for everyone.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Players continued to register for the $250K.\u00a0Kristen Foxen\u00a0and\u00a0Michael Moncek\u00a0were two of the fresh stacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But, as one Foxen entered, another \u2013 Alex \u2013 departed. By WSOP standards, the players were set for a very reasonable end time of 9pm today, but Kabrhel still found time to eliminate his new buddy, who he\u2019s taken to calling \u201cFoxy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
A lot has been said about Kabrhel, but he has real energy. He was up and down today, pacing the floor, looking at the other tables, constantly talking \u2014 \u201cNice call Jason [Koon], very good call\u201d \u2014 then back to his seat where \u201cMikey\u201d (Michael Moncek) was getting most of his attention.\u00a0<\/p>\n
There seems to be a different attitude towards him from the other players, who seem more accepting and more willing to engage. That\u2019s a good thing.\u00a0He\u2019s a unique player who brings something genuinely different\u00a0to every tournament he plays in. And the railbirds love him.<\/p>\n
On a board reading , Kabrhel theatrically announced all in by stating, \u201cThree million!\u201d to defending champ Suvarna, who was nursing a short stack. He elected to keep that intact and folded. \u201cIf you ever need anything from me, I\u2019m here for you,\u201d said Kabrhel.<\/p>\n
By the end of the night, the rail was three deep, but there was still time for Kabrhel to add to his stack.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou want to bust?\u201d he asked Moncek. \u201cOr double,\u201d Moncek nodded. \u201cI don\u2019t want to bust you,\u201d replied Kabrhel. \u201cI have other targets on this table.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
On a flop of , Moncek bet 55K.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201c55K?\u201d said Kabrhel. \u201cThat\u2019s nothing.\u201d He called to the \u00a0turn, and both players checked. On the\u00a0\u00a0river, Kabrhel started up again.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cGo all-in or fold,\u201d Kabrhel said. \u201cOr check. Just muck your hand.\u201d<\/p>\n
Moncek checked. \u201cI think it\u2019s time, Mikey,\u201d Kabrhel said, looking at his chips. \u201cI won\u2019t move all-in because I like you,\u201d he added before announcing, \u201c2.5 million\u201d \u2014 most of his chips and way more than Moncek had.<\/p>\n
Moncek called and flipped over \u00a0for a straight. Kabrhel showed\u00a0\u00a0for a bigger one. \u201cGG Mikey,\u201d Kabrhel said as he started stacking his chips. \u201cGood luck next bullet.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
That was enough to give Kabrhel the overnight chip lead, but he still had enough energy to hijack the end-of-night Negreanu vlog update.
