In the video, passengers could be heard gasping as the right-side engine flickered violently, sparks scattering into the darkness before short bursts of fire licked the metal exterior.

The incident occurred shortly after take-off from the Greek holiday island of Corfu, where the aircraft had begun what was supposed to be a routine evening flight. The plane had already climbed smoothly, reaching a cruising altitude of

According to German broadcaster WDR, the aircraft suffered a disruption to the turbine airflow—a sudden imbalance in the engine’s internal pressure. This can cause backfiring, surging, and in rare cases, exactly what passengers saw:

Inside the cabin, what had been a calm flight turned into a tense and surreal scene. Some travelers pressed their faces to the windows, trying to understand the flashes of orange outside. Others gripped their armrests. Parents tightened their hold on their children. Flight attendants moved with forced steadiness, repeating instructions, their professional calm proving that something serious was happening.

Meanwhile in the cockpit, the pilots quickly shut down the affected engine and began running through emergency procedures. The Boeing 757 is designed to fly safely on a single engine, but the blaze left no room for delay or uncertainty. The pilots contacted air traffic control and declared an emergency, requesting immediate diversion.

The aircraft, which had originally been en route to Düsseldorf, abandoned its northbound course. Air traffic controllers coordinated a rapid descent and redirected the flight to the nearest suitable airport—

As the plane approached Brindisi, emergency crews were already positioned along the runway: fire engines, ambulances, and response vehicles lined up in anticipation. The landing itself was tense but smooth; the plane touched down safely and rolled to a controlled stop as firefighters surrounded it, ready to intervene if the damaged engine reignited.

Passengers, shaken but unharmed, were eventually escorted off the aircraft. Many later described the experience as the most frightening moment of their lives—an ordinary holiday flight turned into a brush with disaster, saved by the crew’s quick reaction and training.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced late Friday that the U.S. has revoked the visas of Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, several of his judicial allies, and their immediate family members in response to what he described as a “political witch hunt” targeting former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

“[President Trump] made clear that his administration will hold accountable foreign nationals who are responsible for censorship of protected expression in the United States,” said Rubio, who is also serving as President Trump’s national security adviser.

“Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes’s political witch hunt against Jair Bolsonaro created a persecution and censorship complex so sweeping that it not only violates basic rights of Brazilians, but also extends beyond Brazil’s shores to target Americans,” Rubio continued.

“I have therefore ordered visa revocations for Moraes and his allies on the court, as well as their immediate family members effective immediately,” he noted further.

The secretary of state’s announcement came hours after Brazil’s highest court issued restraining orders and search warrants against former President Jair Bolsonaro, barring him from contacting foreign officials.
