The House voted Tuesday to formally rebuke Rep. Jes\u00fas \u201cChuy\u201d Garc\u00eda over the timing of his retirement announcement, backing a resolution from Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and exposing a nasty split inside the party. The measure passed 236-183-4, with 23 Democrats breaking ranks.<\/p>\n
The resolution accuses Garc\u00eda of \u201cundermining the process of a fair and free election\u201d and says his move was \u201cincompatible with the spirit\u201d of the Constitution. Supporters framed it as a basic issue of voter rights.<\/p>\n
\u201cVoters decide elections, not politicians,\u201d Rep. Greg Landsman of Ohio wrote on X. \u201cWe are the voting rights, voter protection, voter empowerment party, and there should never be an exception to that.\u201d<\/p>\n
But several Democrats\u00a0blasted\u00a0the vote as a pointless spectacle aimed at humiliating a veteran progressive.<\/p>\n
\u201cChuy Garc\u00eda is a legend and an icon in his community. His progressive record is unmatched here. \u2026 I will not question his progressive credentials. You know, he faced a situation, a personal situation. He acted within the framework of the law,\u201d said Rep. Adriano Espaillat of New York.<\/p>\n
Garc\u00eda, 69, filed for reelection on Oct. 27 before abruptly reversing course. He later said he would retire to focus on his family, noting his wife was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis more than a decade ago. The announcement came after the Nov. 3 filing deadline, leaving his chief of staff, Patty Garc\u00eda \u2014 no relation \u2014 as the sole Democrat on the primary ballot. She submitted her paperwork just before the 5 p.m. cutoff.<\/p>\n
Chuy Garc\u00eda endorsed her, saying she \u201cknows the issues, knows the players in Washington, and has the talent and heart to deliver real results for working families.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gluesenkamp Perez said on the House floor that she respects Garc\u00eda and believes his \u201creasons for retiring are noble.\u201d She argued that the timing still crossed a line.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t get your cake and eat it, too. If you\u2019re not going to run, you don\u2019t get to choose your successor, no matter how noble the work you have done beforehand,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Garc\u00eda\u2019s office circulated a fact sheet before the vote insisting that \u201canyone, at any time before the filing deadline, could have collected petitions and filed to run.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhich is exactly what several candidates did, one of whom filed as a Republican and the other with the Working Class Party. Anyone willing to file as a Democrat could have filed petitions before his announcement,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n
Democratic leaders tried to shut down the\u00a0resolution\u00a0but failed.<\/p>\n
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries ripped\u00a0the push\u00a0as political theater, dismissing the uproar over Garc\u00eda\u2019s timing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do not support this so-called resolution of disapproval. And I strongly support Congressman Chuy Garc\u00eda,\u201d Jeffries said. \u201cHe\u2019s been a progressive champion in disenfranchised communities for decades \u2014 including during his time in Congress \u2014 and he\u2019s made life better for the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n
