A resolution denouncing the \u201chorrors of socialism\u201d was approved by the House by a vote of 285-98 on Friday morning, just hours before President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Zohran Mamdani, the incoming Democratic socialist mayor of New York.<\/p>\n
Republicans and 86 Democrats approved the measure. Two others voted present. No Republican voted to oppose it.<\/p>\n
GOP officials, including Speaker Mike Johnson, have denounced Mamdani\u2019s win in the country\u2019s biggest city, portraying him as the newest radical incarnation of the Democratic Party. As the 2026 midterm elections approach, they have already made it clear that they intend to use him as a political battering ram.<\/p>\n
Republicans wrote the bill, which Democrats attacked, saying it \u201cselectively lists certain despotic leaders and the harms of totalitarian regimes self-labeled socialist.\u201d Party officials did not, however, explicitly call for a no vote. Mamdani\u2019s abrupt ascension has clearly unnerved many moderates, particularly those in New York.<\/p>\n
Mamdani said Thursday that although he holds significant policy differences with President Donald Trump, he intends to work with the administration on any initiatives that he believes will benefit New Yorkers.<\/p>\n
Mamdani is scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House on Friday at 3 p.m. ET. It will be their first meeting and comes shortly after Mamdani\u2019s victory in the November 4 New York City mayoral election.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have many disagreements with the President, and I believe that we should be relentless and pursue all avenues and all meetings that can make our city affordable for every single New Yorker,\u201d Mamdani told reporters,\u00a0per NDTV.<\/p>\n
\u201cI intend to make it clear to President Trump that I will work with him on any agenda that benefits New Yorkers. If an agenda hurts New Yorkers, I will also be the first to say so,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Mamdani noted that his team reached out to the administration for the meeting \u201cbecause I will work with anyone to make life more affordable for the more than eight and a half million people who call this city home.\u201d He also said it\u2019s customary for an incoming New York City Mayor to meet with the White House, \u201cgiven the mutual reliance.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said the meeting is especially important amid a national affordability crisis \u2014 a challenge New Yorkers experience across the city \u2014 as well as concerns in many municipalities about maintaining public safety while responding to policy changes implemented by the current administration.<\/p>\n
Mamdani went on to note that for New Yorkers, his meeting with the president \u201cis between two very different candidates who they voted for the same reason. They wanted a leader who would take on the cost of living crisis that makes it impossible for working people to afford living in this city.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a post on Truth Social Wednesday night, Trump had said that the \u201ccommunist\u201d Mayor of New York City \u201cZohran \u2018Kwame\u2019 Mamdani, has asked for a meeting. We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump has been sharply critical of Mamdani\u2019s policy positions and warned on the eve of the November 4 election that a Mamdani victory would be a \u201ccomplete and total economic and social disaster\u201d for New York City.<\/p>\n
In his victory speech, Mamdani pushed back against Trump, who has intensified immigration enforcement during his second term. Mamdani said New York would continue to be strengthened by its immigrant communities and, following his historic win, would now be \u201cled by an immigrant.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him. And if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power,\u201d Mamdani had said to raucous applause.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not only how we stop Trump; it\u2019s how we stop the next one. So, Donald Trump, since I know you\u2019re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up,\u201d Mamdani added.<\/p>\n
Trump described Mamdani\u2019s victory speech as \u201cvery angry,\u201d saying the mayor-elect was \u201coff to a bad start\u201d and would struggle to succeed without showing respect for federal leadership.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
