The\u00a0Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD)<\/strong>\u00a0on Thursday issued a warning of\u00a0thunderstorms and rain across the upper catchments of major rivers within the next 24 hours<\/strong>, raising fears of worsening floods in the southern Sindh province. The alert comes as the country\u2019s\u00a0monsoon death toll has surpassed 1,000 since late June<\/strong>, underscoring the severity of the ongoing crisis.<\/p>\n Heavy monsoon rains, combined with excess water released from Indian dams, have caused the\u00a0Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers<\/strong>\u00a0in Punjab province to overflow, inundating more than\u00a04,700 villages<\/strong>\u00a0in Pakistan\u2019s agricultural heartland. The floods have destroyed standing crops, damaged homes, and displaced millions, forcing the government to launch\u00a0large-scale rescue and relief operations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Relief camps have been established across multiple districts, while rescue teams continue evacuations with the support of the\u00a0Pakistan Army and Navy<\/strong>. Although Punjab\u2019s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported some signs of stabilization, the situation downstream in Sindh remains precarious as floodwaters flow into the\u00a0Indus River<\/strong>.<\/p>\n According to the PMD, flood levels vary across Sindh\u2019s major barrages:<\/p>\n Guddu Barrage<\/strong>: medium flood<\/p>\n Sukkur Barrage<\/strong>: high flood<\/p>\n Kotri Barrage<\/strong>: low flood (expected to remain at medium flood until the end of September)<\/p>\n Elsewhere, the\u00a0River Sutlej<\/strong>\u00a0is at medium flood near Ganda Singh Wala, while water levels at Sulemanki and Islam barrages remain low.<\/p>\n The PMD also forecast\u00a0thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall<\/strong>\u00a0in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Lahore, Peshawar, Kohat, Bannu, Sargodha, Faisalabad, and Zhob. Mostly dry weather is expected across the country after\u00a0September 19<\/strong>.<\/p>\n At least\u00a0300,000 people<\/strong>\u00a0remain displaced and are living in tents, according to official data. Over\u00a02,000 relief camps<\/strong>\u00a0are currently operational nationwide, with rescue and aid efforts continuing across Punjab and Sindh.<\/p>\n Pakistan, which contributes only\u00a01% of global greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong>, is among the countries most vulnerable to\u00a0climate change<\/strong>.
