Heavy rains and landslides in Nepal and northern India<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0have claimed the lives of more than\u00a0<\/span>60 people<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0, as rescue teams struggle to reach isolated communities in mountainous terrain.<\/p>\n

Torrential downpours have battered Nepal since late last week, causing rivers to overflow and inundating many areas of the Himalayan nation. According to\u00a0<\/span>Shanti Mahat<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0, spokesperson for Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, at least\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>44 people have died due to rain-triggered disasters<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0, and five remain missing.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the hardest-hit eastern district of\u00a0<\/span>Illam<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0,\u00a0<\/span>37 people lost their lives in landslides<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0. Rescue workers face major challenges as roads are blocked, while rivers in the capital\u00a0<\/span>Kathmandu<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0have also overflowed, flooding settlements along their banks. Security personnel are assisting with helicopters and motorboats, and prior flood warnings allowed some residents to move belongings to safer locations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Across the border in India, at least\u00a0<\/span>20 people were killed in the Darjeeling district<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0after heavy overnight rains triggered\u00a0<\/span>flash floods and landslides<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0, destroying homes and infrastructure.
