The Lightning played hard in this game, but at times they didn\u2019t play smart. They took some avoidable penalties\u2014including one in the opening minutes that put them into an early deficit\u2014and committed some costly turnovers\/mistakes. They also happened to be on the receiving end of some bad breaks. In the end, it was too much to overcome, and they saw their four-game home winning streak come to an end.<\/p>\n

Three times in the first period, the Rangers grabbed a two-goal lead. Three times, the Lightning whittled the deficit to one goal. The first Tampa Bay tally was a memorable one: Scott Sabourin scored his third career NHL goal (and first since February 2020), and both Curtis Douglas and Jack Finley picked up their first career points with assists on the tally. A hardworking forechecking shift for Oliver Bjorkstand, Yanni Gourde, and Zemgus Girgensons yielded a rebound goal for Girgensons. And late in the frame, Jake Guentzel finished a shorthanded breakaway, giving the Lightning their first shorthanded tally of the season.<\/p>\n

Of the four New York first-period goals, three included fortunate breaks. An Adam Fox power-play shot from the high slot went wide of the net, but it caromed off the end boards directly to Will Cuylle at the top of the crease. Cuylle finished from point-blank range. A Lightning neutral-zone turnover fueled the counter-attack on the second goal, but the Rangers also got a bounce. Mika Zibanejad\u2019s centering feed hit off J.T. Miller\u2019s skate and ricocheted into the net. Following Alexis Lafreniere\u2019s goal off an odd-man rush, Will Borgen finished the first-period scoring when his shot from the high slot deflected off a Lightning stick and caromed over Andrei Vasilevskiy\u2019s glove.<\/p>\n

The Lightning dictated play for most of the second period, but they couldn\u2019t find the tying goal. It stayed a 4-3 game until the late stages of the second, when the Rangers caught another break. While defending a rush chance, Vasilevskiy fell to the ice and was not set for Vincent Trocheck\u2019s shot. The goal was a big one for the Rangers, who carried the momentum from that tally into the third period.<\/p>\n

The Rangers held that momentum in the early minutes of the third, creating several dangerous looks. Eventually, Trocheck finished a chance from the slot, extending the New York lead to 6-3. The Lightning amassed lots of shot attempts in the closing minutes when they received a power play and pulled the goalie, but most of those attempts were either blocked or missed the net. The Rangers concluded the scoring with an empty-netter.<\/p>\n

The Lightning were without several regulars for this game. Now they get a couple of days to (hopefully) heal up before beginning a weekend back-to-back on Saturday in Sunrise against the Panthers.<\/p>\n

PHILADELPHIA – While offensive expectations are always a story in Philadelphia, in Detroit, a high-octane offense is part of the Lions’ DNA.<\/p>\n

So much so that after a disappointing loss to Minnesota in Week 9, Lions head coach Dam Campbell took over the play-calling duties from offensive coordinator from John Morton.<\/p>\n

The results were impressive. The Lions piled up a gaudy 546 yards and 44 points while demoralizing the Washington Commanders last week.<\/p>\n

Armed with perhaps the most accurate quarterback in the NFL with Jared Goff, the Sonic and Knuckles backfield duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, one of the top volume receivers in Amon-Ra St. Brown, a top-tier deep threat in Jameson Williams, and one of the better tight ends in the NFL with Sam LaPorta, and an offensive line headlined by the gifted Penei Sewell, the Lions are the most imposing offense in the NFL.<\/p>\n

If you don’t show up with your “A Game,” there’s a chance you may get embarrassed against Detroit. Of course, the 7-2 Eagles arrive at Sunday night’s much-anticipated matchup with the 6-3 Lions with a one-game lead in the conference.<\/p>\n

A win at Lincoln Financial Field at Detroit would solidify the inside track to the top seed for the reigning Super Bowl champions and Campbell understands what he’s up against with a Vic Fangio defense that played lights out against the Packers with new addition Jaelan Phillips playing a major role.<\/p>\n

“They have a style and they’re very good at,” Campbell said of the Eagles’ defense. “I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily complex but it’s very sound, It’s very sound across the board and like I say Nick [Sirianni] has done an unbelievable job.”<\/p>\n

Campbell saved his most glowing comment for Fangio.<\/p>\n

“Coach Fangio, he’s a legend,” Campbell noted. “It stood the test of time, that style of defense. The way they play, the coverage, the rush goes hand in hand and it’s a pain in the ass.”<\/p>\n

In other words, it shapes up as good vs. good when the Lions offense is working aagainst Fangio’s unit.<\/p>\n

“It’s hard. It’s hard to deal with offensively,” Campbell said of the Philadelphia defense. “But I just think it’s good sound football and they don’t beat themselves. I mean at the end of the day they don’t beat themselves. When they need a critical play. They come up with a critical play and that’s what champions do and that’s why they’ve been able to have the success they’ve had.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
