\u201cBeing Eddie\u201d just dropped on Netflix and it explores the legendary comedian\u2019s rise to fame, the challenges he\u2019s faced in the industry and what he might have up his sleeve for his fans in the next few years \u2014 but it\u2019s also full of entertaining anecdotes and shocking stories from Murphy\u2019s career.<\/p>\n
Much of the documentary is filled with previously told stories like how Murphy replaced Richard Pryor in films like \u201cTrading Places,\u201d and how he turned down cocaine while hanging out with Robin Williams and John Belushi. But the iconic star also shares new stories about his struggles with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and he even gives an update on his wild story about late actor Yul Brynner supposedly offering him an opportunity to have sex with his wife at the time.<\/p>\n
In addition, Murphy candidly speaks about his biological father\u2019s murder that Murphy\u2019s late brother Charlie Murphy shares was the result of a \u201clover\u2019s quarrel.\u201d And he opens up about how his stepfather shaped him into the man he is today.<\/p>\n
The documentary features interviews from longtime comedians and friends of Murphy\u2019s like Arsenio Hall, Dave Chappelle, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler and more, as Murphy laughs his way through his career.<\/p>\n

Throughout the documentary, Eddie Murphy reflects on the entertainment giants he knew and admired. One of them was his \u201chero,\u201d boxing legend Muhammed Ali. As Murphy shows personal photos around his house, he points out one of him and Ali. In the photo, Murphy is punching Ali, who looks to be around late 50s, with his right arm.<\/p>\n
\u201cAli is my hero, but I did punch him in the face one night,\u201d Murphy explains in the doc. \u201cYou know Ali, he talks some s\u2014t, and every now and again Ali talks too much shit. I punched him in his face.\u201d<\/p>\n
While discussing \u201cwhat a life\u201d he\u2019s had, Eddie Murphy corrects the longtime Hollywood theory that he was laughing at his \u201cDelirious\u201d outfit during his sidewalk scene in \u201cBeverly Hills Cop.\u201d Murphy\u2019s bright red, leather \u201cDelirious\u201d outfit stirred up chatter after the success of his stand-up show, so much so that director John Landis made it an Easter Egg in the 1984 cop film.<\/p>\n
In the scene, Murphy sees two men walking down the street, and once they walk past him, he starts laughing. Many thought it was him laughing at his old taste in clothing, but Murphy explains that it was actually one of the actors making a silly face at him as they passed by.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s not what\u2019s happening at all; I\u2019m not laughing at me,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cAs he walked passed, he made like a weird face, and I was laughing at the face he made. I wasn\u2019t laughing at me.\u201d<\/p>\n
During Murphy\u2019s 21st birthday, the comedian says legendary actor Yul Brynner propositioned him to come \u201cparty\u201d with him and his wife at his apartment. Years later, Murphy shares that he realized \u201cThe King and I\u201d star was propositioning him to have sex with his wife, whom he didn\u2019t name. Murphy said he turned down the offer at the time, but now regrets doing so.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow, I wish I would have went,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cThe story would end better if, \u2018Yeah, I went back to Yul Brynner\u2019s apartment and f\u2014ked his wife, and he was watching f\u2014k, saying, \u201cetcetera, etcetera, etcetera.\u201d<\/p>\n
Murphy shares that drugs and alcohol were around him constantly during his rise to fame, but he always remained clean. He recalls turning down Robin Williams and John Belushi.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey put some blow on the table, and I\u2019m standing there with two heroes. I wasn\u2019t even curious,\u201d Murphy explained. \u201cI was just not with it. I\u2019ve never even tried cocaine or touched cocaine or some shit like that. I don\u2019t drink, I don\u2019t smoke cigarettes. I never smoked a joint \u2019til I was 30 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n
Murphy\u2019s longtime friend Arsenio Hall said Murphy continues to craft new material for a stand-up return.<\/p>\n
\u201cEddie never stops creating,\u201d Hall said. \u201cI walk through his house, and I see stuff written on pads, so I\u2019m like, \u2018He\u2019s thinking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Murphy said he often records bits on his phone when a new idea comes to his mind.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver the years I got so much stuff, so many things that\u2019s like, all I have to do is go through my phone and, \u2018Oh yeah, that would be a good bit,\u201d Murphy said. So it wouldn\u2019t be hard to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
While reflecting on his childhood, Murphy remembered when he learned that he may have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). At the time, the comedian was sharing how he used to repeatedly check his childhood home\u2019s stove to make sure the gas was off. But after seeing on the news that OCD was a mental illness, he \u201cforced\u201d himself to break away from his compulsions.<\/p>\n
\u201cI made myself stop doing it,\u201d Murphy said. \u201c\u2018Mental illness my ass.\u2019 I forced myself to stop doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Even though he still checks the gas every night, sometimes he\u2019ll check it twice.<\/p>\n
Murphy shared that one of the reasons he refused to return to \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d was because of\u00a0David Spade\u2019s \u201cfalling star\u201d joke\u00a0during the show\u2019s \u201cSpade in America\u201d segment.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was hurt, my feelings were hurt,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cI wasn\u2019t like, \u2018F\u2014k David Spade,\u2019 I was like, \u2018F\u2014k \u2018SNL.\u2019 \u2018F\u2014k y\u2019all. How y\u2019all gon\u2019 do this s\u2014t.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
But when discussing his 2019 comeback, he said he has no \u201csmoke\u201d against Spade.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat little friction I had with \u2018SNL\u2019 was 35 years ago. I don\u2019t have no smoke with no David Spade. I don\u2019t have any heat or any of that with nobody.\u201d<\/p>\n
After more than three decades, Murphy finally made his return to \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d in 2019, marking \u201cSNL\u201d star Michael Che\u2019s most nerve-wracking episode because he didn\u2019t want to fail the comedy legend.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Eddie Murphy show was the most tense start to a show I\u2019ve ever been a part of,\u201d Che said. \u201cIt was, like, scary almost. This had to go well, and we would be letting down Eddie Murphy if it was bad.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing Eddie\u201d weaves in interviews with his older brother Charlie Murphy, who died of leukemia in 2017, throughout the documentary. At one point, Murphy candidly says, \u201cthere\u2019s nobody like Charlie,\u201d and no one \u201cfunnier,\u201d sharing that Charlie even gave him the biggest laughs in his life. The comedian then briefly goes silent before sharing that he misses his brother.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, I miss my brother,\u201d Murphy said, adding that he tries not to wallow on the subject of death or those he\u2019s lost. \u201cI just touch little memories. I don\u2019t be going and wallowing in it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Murphy hasn\u2019t done a stand-up show or special since his 1987 special \u201cRaw,\u201d but he said there\u2019s a chance he\u2019d back up the microphone if he felt so inclined.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf it struck me one day, I would do it again,\u201d Murphy said.<\/p>\n
Earlier in the documentary, Murphy shared that if he did do another comedy show, he\u2019d incorporate puppets made to look like Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd sit in and have them on the side, have like a conversation between the two, and be in the middle,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cI give at least 10 good minutes of jokes out of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
He even breaks into some of the jokes at the end of the documentary after being given ventriloquist dolls of Pryor and Cosby, which he adds with his Paul Mooney doll.<\/p>\n
\u201cDid you put that pill in that chocolate\u201d? Murphy asks his Cosby dummy.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2018Now, see how you gon\u2019 ask me did I put the pill in the chocolate, when you know that I put the pill in the chocolate!\u2019\u201d Murphy responds as Cosby.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2018I put the pill in my mouth \u2014 motha\u2014 f\u2014k the chocolate,\u2019\u201d Murphy says as Pryor.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2018This n\u2014a has lost his mind.\u2019 That\u2019s what Mooney would say,\u201d Murphy jokes. \u201c\u2018In the documentary he broke out three n\u2014a puppets. N\u2014a, I spun around in my grave.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
The Detroit Red Wings surprised fans and analysts by signing veteran defenseman Travis Hamonic this past offseason. The deal was hardly an eye-opener. Hamonic signed a one-year, $1 million contract. That deal was in line with GM Steve Yzerman\u2019s current philosophy of low-risk, low-reward deals for veteran players.<\/p>\n
The hope was that\u00a0Hamonic could provide insurance\u00a0for the Red Wings\u2019 mostly young blueliners. Players like Simon Edvinsson, Albert Johansson, Axel Sandin-Pellikka, and another offseason signing, Jacob Bernard-Docker, aren\u2019t exactly sure bets on the blue line.<\/p>\n
Hamonic potentially delivered veteran depth\u00a0that Erik Gustafsson and Justin Holl just didn\u2019t provide.<\/p>\n
But now,\u00a0Yzerman\u2019s gamble has not paid off.\u00a0Sure, it was a low-risk wager. But it stings nonetheless. Hamonic has played nine games this season, getting one assist and 14 penalty minutes. While Hamonic wasn\u2019t signed to light up the scoreboard, the 14 penalty minutes are something tough to swallow.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s a crucial point because he\u2019s getting most of his special teams exposure on the penalty kill. And that\u2019s where things compound further. Hamonic\u2019s expected goals for are a paltry 42.0, with his relative expected goals for -8.8.<\/p>\n
In other words, Hamonic is costing the Red Wings goals instead of helping the team produce them. If these numbers seem like an aberration, it\u2019s worth pointing out they\u2019re part of a trend that the Red Wings chose to ignore.<\/p>\n
Two seasons ago, Hamonic had his worst relative goals for at -11.2 while playing with the Ottawa Senators. Furthermore, last season, Hamonic landed at -4.9 relative goals for.<\/p>\n
Those numbers paint a picture of a veteran blueliner who\u2019s never really lived up to his potential. He never really rebounded to the same production level since his best season in 2014-15 with the New York Islanders. That season, Hamonic notched five goals and 33 points. Since then, his highest point total has been 21 points, matched twice.<\/p>\n
Fortunately for the Red Wings, Hamonic is on a one-year deal. Unfortunately for the 35-year-old, this could be his final NHL contract. Perhaps he might land a PTO next season. But it\u2019s doubtful he\u2019ll gain any serious consideration beyond that.<\/p>\n
