When banks decide your access to money, the consequences can be sudden and sweeping. Vietnam just proved it by carrying out one of the largest financial purges the modern world has ever seen.
Earlier this month, the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) confirmed that commercial lenders had deleted more than 86 million bank accounts — nearly half the nation’s total. The move followed new rules requiring biometric authentication, such as facial scans or fingerprint checks, for both account verification and certain transactions. Accounts that failed to meet the new standards or had been inactive were simply shut down.
Officials framed the measure as necessary to fight fraud, cybercrime, and money laundering. But the scale of closures shocked many, stripping millions of citizens of their financial lifeline in a matter of days.
Vietnam had roughly 200 million bank accounts before the purge. After the crackdown, just over 113 million remained active. That means nearly half of all accounts in the nation vanished under the stroke of a regulation.
For foreign residents, the situation has been especially difficult. In-person checks are mandatory, and remote compliance options are virtually nonexistent. Anyone living abroad or unable to travel quickly has been left stranded without access to their funds.
The purge demonstrates a chilling reality: financial access under centralized banking exists only at the discretion of regulators and politicians. What citizens assume is “their money” can disappear instantly if government says so.
“This is why we’re using Bitcoin,” one X user posted after the news broke. The statement captured the rising sentiment that decentralized alternatives are the only shield against state overreach.
This is not an isolated case. From Canada to China, governments have weaponized banks against their own citizens. During the 2022 Freedom Convoy in Canada, authorities froze bank and crypto wallets connected to truckers and their supporters. In China, rural bank customers found their deposits frozen for months in 2022, sparking rare street protests.
The United Kingdom also routinely deploys “account freezing orders” under anti-money-laundering laws, which often ensnare ordinary customers. And in the United States, civil asset forfeiture empowers authorities to seize assets even without a criminal conviction.
Critics argue that such actions expose a structural weakness: money in the traditional system is never fully yours. It exists at the mercy of institutions and regulators. With Vietnam’s purge, this weakness is on display for the world to see.
Supporters of biometric banking say the rules safeguard against fraud and protect consumers. But to millions who lost their accounts, the policy is punishment, not protection.
By tying financial access to biometric identity, Vietnam has concentrated immense power in the hands of government. A technical glitch, a political shift, or a compliance failure can now erase access to savings overnight.
The irony is that in trying to project strength, Vietnam may have given the strongest argument yet for decentralized money. Every deleted account is a billboard for Bitcoin.
Bitcoin doesn’t require biometric scans. It doesn’t ask for government-issued IDs. It cannot be frozen or deleted by decree. It moves peer-to-peer, beyond the reach of centralized control.
Advocates argue that Bitcoin offers genuine financial sovereignty. As one crypto supporter put it, it provides “protection not only from cybercriminals but also from state overreach or unforeseen regulatory changes.”
In this sense, Bitcoin is more than an investment. It is insurance against the tyranny of compliance mandates. It is freedom preserved in code.
The Vietnamese example shows how fragile trust in traditional banks really is. Citizens believed their money was safe, but half the accounts in the nation vanished almost overnight.
And this wasn’t triggered by war or financial collapse, but by regulation. A simple rule change from the central bank was enough to sever millions from their savings.
That precedent should terrify anyone paying attention. If it can happen in Vietnam, it can happen anywhere. Governments worldwide are increasingly knitting identity systems directly into financial access, creating a new era of digital control.

“Even if they are conducting a criminal investigation, you should probably pick up the phone and call us,” Luna told Fox News. “We have been more than patient.”

It is horrible to even consider holding somebody imprisoned for our amusement, but making someone wear a torture vest is incredibly cruel.
Bear Caesar lived in a sort of hell on earth for the first portion of her life. In China, where she resided, a farm gathered materials for traditional Chinese medicine.
She was brutally made to use her gallbladder to feed bile to the farm. Her captors put her in a tight metal vest and drained her of the fluid around the clock. He could hardly move in the cramped space where she was imprisoned.
However, just when it seemed like her life would never get better, compassionate animal rights activists stepped in to support Caesar. It made all the difference.
Caesar grew up in what can only be described as hell on earth, just like hundreds of other bears in China.
She was strapped with what could only be characterized as a torture device and made to dwell in a cramped, tiny place. The armor tightened her body like a medieval torture device, and a spike pointed at her neck stopped Caesar from trying to bite or take the contraption off.
Caesar’s side was far worse, with an open wound. They took the bile from her gallbladder, which she was compelled to provide, to create traditional Chinese medicine.
“It’s the worst imaginable bile farm torture,”
Animals Asia, who saved Caesar, said about the vest.
Caesar endured a great deal of suffering in her appalling living circumstances, and it’s amazing that she survived. Caesar’s life changed in 2004 when she was one of several fortunate bears saved by Animals Asia, despite the gloom and the lack of hope that the torturing would stop.
She was now severely injured, irritated, and miserable. She was eventually able to remove the terrible garment and receive the affection and attention she so richly deserved, however, because of Animals Asia.
She changed entirely, becoming a powerful, majestic bear with a gorgeous, glowing coat. Caesar was a mark of respect, much like the Roman general from whom she inherited her name. She weighed 300 kg and was a remarkable presence due to her physical strength and stature.
“Caesar’s scars have all but disappeared and today she is an astonishingly beautiful (and formidable) bear, ” the organization wrote back in 2016.
Her favorite pastimes after being rescued were digging, swimming, and tanning, particularly in the pleasant, chilly fall weather.
”She has now spent a dozen happy years with Animals Asia in Chengdu, enjoying swims in the sunshine as well as indulging her natural digging instincts – particularly when the weather cools in the autumn,”
Animals Asia said.
”Seeing a bear shake themselves like this is always a moment full of awe – they’re such incredibly beautiful, powerful animals and none more so than Caesar,”
Nic Field, director of the group’s China bear and vet team, said in a statement. “To see her out in the sunshine – a dozen years on from her rescue – it’s hard to imagine her existence back then.”
Even though Caesar was spared, it’s crucial to keep in mind that much more needs to be done to put an end to animal suffering.
An estimated 10,000 bears are imprisoned in China. Caesar’s tale should hopefully act as a wake-up call, inspiring animal lovers everywhere to unite and work toward ending this.
”These metal jackets are now illegal so less common, but it’s likely that there are still some out there,” Steve Jackson, head of communications for Animals Asia, told The Dodo, in 2016.
Even though Caesar’s rescue was only a minor protest against the bile industry, it had a profound impact on the life of the brown bear who had been suffering. She made up for lost time by swimming, climbing, and running freely across the grass after spending years buried in the dark.
Unfortunately, she eventually succumbed to the terrible conditions she had to suffer on the gallbladder farm. An extremely aggressive tumor formed, serving as a harsh reminder of the infections and cellular damage brought on by frequent gallbladder removals, which are a common occurrence for many bears who are rescued.
Caesar died shortly after the malignancy was found, leaving Animals Asia and her caregivers devastated. Her narrative serves as a sobering reminder of the bravery and tenacity of creatures who endure unspeakable cruelty as well as a moving update on the continued problems faced by bears like her.

It was the happiest day of my life — our wedding day. I was marrying the woman I loved with all my heart. We had been preparing for this day for over a year, and everything had to be perfect. Almost a hundred people had gathered for the ceremony — family, friends, colleagues. It felt like pure joy.
Everyone came up to congratulate us, wishing us love, loyalty, and many happy years together. I was standing among the guests when my bride stepped away for a few minutes to take pictures with her friends.
Suddenly, a woman I didn’t recognize approached me wearing a long green dress. I assumed she was a guest from my wife’s side, and not wanting to be rude, I accepted her congratulations. But there was something odd in her tone. She spoke as if she’d known me for years — recalling details, making hints, joking way too intimately.

We had to interrupt the celebration to figure out what was going on. We called security, and the woman was escorted off the premises. Only a few days later did we learn the terrifying truth about why the dog acted that way and who this woman really was
It turned out the woman was the mother of my ex-girlfriend. We had dated before I met my wife. After our breakup, she went through a very difficult time — lost her job, left the city, and was on the verge of a breakdown.
Her mother blamed me for everything and believed I had “ruined” her daughter’s life. She had come to the wedding to sabotage it. What exactly she had planned, we don’t know. But Koko sensed something was wrong before anyone else.
If it hadn’t been for him… I don’t even want to imagine what could have happened.
