BRUINS BREAK HABS’ HEARTS AGAIN: Montreal Drops 5th Loss in 6 Games in Brutal, Bloody Rivalry Night

“We can talk about effort all night, but it has to turn into results. We’re getting chances and not finishing — that’s on us. This rivalry means a lot, and nights like this hurt because you feel like you’re letting people down.”

— Cole Caufield

MONTREAL — Saturday night at the Bell Centre was supposed to be electric. Instead, it became a violent reminder of just how quickly the Montreal Canadiens are spiraling. After blood spilled, fights erupted, and countless chances slipped away, the Habs fell 3-2 to the Boston Bruins — their

From the opening faceoff, this wasn’t just a game — it was a war.

Just four minutes into the game, two separate fights broke out, setting the tone for a night of pure physicality. The Bell Centre roared, the gloves dropped, and the rivalry instantly came alive.

But only one team used the chaos to their advantage.

The Bruins struck first when David Pastrnak completely fooled Samuel Montembeault with a perfect fake shot, feeding Marat Khusnutdinov through heavy traffic for a 1-0 lead.

Montreal pushed back but continued a frustrating trend: wasting golden power-play chances. Despite earning a full 5-on-3, they couldn’t convert — a theme that would haunt them all night.

Their lone bright moment came shorthanded when Jake Evans finished a beautiful 2-on-1 to tie the game 1-1 after the opening period.

The second period unraveled quickly for Montreal.

Mason Lohrei restored Boston’s lead early with a shot Montembeault surely wants back.

Then, déjà vu.

Another 5-on-3 power play for Montreal.
Another complete failure.

Moments later came the most terrifying scene of the night: Noah Dobson’s rocket shot struck Charlie McAvoy directly in the face, dropping the Bruins defenseman instantly as blood poured onto the ice. He was sent immediately to a nearby hospital — a chilling reminder of the brutality of this rivalry.

And as if scripted, Montreal then took a penalty of their own.
Boston punished them instantly.

Viktor Arvidsson blasted home his 200th career goal, making it 3-1 and silencing the Bell Centre.

Cole Caufield gave the Habs life late in the second with a slick finish to cut the deficit to 3-2.

But as he admitted afterward, the team simply isn’t closing when it matters.

The final period saw both teams trade dangerous chances, but only Montembeault kept his team alive with a string of crucial saves.

Still, the Habs couldn’t find the tying goal.

Lane Hutson stood out with three blocked shots and heavy minutes, while Mike Matheson and Alexandre Carrier once again threw their bodies in front of everything.

Juraj Slafkovsky, however, struggled badly — playing timid, losing battles, and ultimately being removed from the power play, despite leading the team in PP scoring earlier this season.

That decision spoke volumes.

This wasn’t just another loss.
It was a statement.

The Habs are slipping — offensively, mentally, and structurally. Even in a game full of emotion, physicality, and scoring chances, they couldn’t execute when it mattered.

And Caufield’s words after the game captured the mood of the entire fanbase:

“We’re getting chances and not finishing — that’s on us. Nights like this hurt.”

Next up: Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday

.
And for the Habs, it’s no longer “just another game.”

It’s a must-win.

The Minnesota Wild (8-7-4) is back on home ice tonight to host the Vegas Golden Knights (8-4-5).  The Wild will be without forward Vladimir Tarasenko for the second straight game.

Tarasenko, 33, has two goals and ten points in 18 games this year for the Wild. He missed Saturday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks with a lower-body injury and will not play again on Sunday.

Wild head coach John Hynes said after the game that Tarasenko’s status will be day-to-day.
