He lied about wanting that baby — she says it was all on purpose, just to keep her from going to college.

He lied about wanting that baby — she says it was all on purpose, just to keep her from going to college.

When the courtroom doors opened, eighteen-year-old Lena Torres walked in holding a folder so tightly her knuckles had turned white. She wore her old high-school hoodie, her hair pulled back, and her eyes swollen from days of crying. Today wasn’t about child support or custody.

Today was about the truth.

On the other side of the room sat Drew Keller, leaning back in his chair like he had nothing to worry about. Arms crossed. A lazy smirk. The same expression he wore the night he promised her everything.

The judge glanced between them. “Ms. Torres, you may speak.”

Lena swallowed hard. She didn’t look at Drew—she couldn’t. Instead, she looked at the judge, then down at her trembling hands.

“He lied,” she began, voice fragile. “He lied about everything. About wanting this baby. About wanting a life with me. About supporting my future.”

Drew rolled his eyes, tapping his fingers loudly on the table.

Lena continued.

“He told everyone I trapped him,” she said. “But that’s not what happened. He… he did it on purpose.”

The courtroom shifted. Even the judge leaned forward.

Lena inhaled slowly, steadying herself. “I had already gotten into Western State University. I had the acceptance letter. I had a scholarship. I told him I wanted to leave, that I wanted to study nursing. And that’s when he started saying things like, ‘What if you stayed?’ and ‘College is just going to change you.’”

Her voice cracked.
“And then he started saying he wanted a baby.”

Drew scoffed loudly. “That’s insane—”

“Mr. Keller,” the judge snapped. “You will remain silent.”

Lena blinked away tears. “I trusted him. I thought he loved me. I thought we were planning a future together.”

She opened the folder, pulling out printed screenshots of messages.

“He told me he was being careful,” she whispered. “He told me everything was safe. And I believed him.”

The judge motioned for the bailiff to collect the papers.

Lena’s voice finally broke.
“But he wasn’t. He admitted it later—after I missed two periods, after I took three tests, after I told him I was pregnant.”

She wiped her face with her sleeve.

A gasp rippled through the courtroom.

Drew sat forward, face reddening. “I never said it like that—”

“You said it exactly like that,” Lena snapped, finally looking at him. Her eyes burned, but this time not with fear. With anger. With awakening.

“You wanted control,” she said. “You didn’t want a baby. You wanted me stuck. You wanted me home. You wanted me dependent on you.”

She held her stomach unconsciously, a protective gesture she didn’t even realize she was making.

“I spent nine months alone,” she continued. “You didn’t go to a single doctor appointment. You told your friends the baby wasn’t yours. And now you sit here acting like I ruined your life?”

Drew’s jaw clenched. “You’re making yourself the victim—”

“She was the victim,” the judge cut in sharply. “And your behavior, Mr. Keller, is deeply concerning.”

Silence fell again.

Lena exhaled shakily. “All I wanted was to build a future. To go to school. To make something of myself. And you took that from me on purpose.”

Her voice softened.

“But I’m done letting you control the story.”

She sat down, exhausted, but standing taller than she had in months.

The judge folded her hands. “Ms. Torres… thank you for your honesty. We will proceed.”

Drew sank back in his chair, the smirk gone.

For the first time, he realized:

Lena wasn’t the girl he manipulated anymore.

She was the woman he underestimated.

And she wasn’t afraid of him anymore.

Courtroom 6B felt like the eye of a storm—quiet on the outside, chaos on the inside. Everyone in the gallery could sense it: this wasn’t just a disagreement. This was the unraveling of a young couple trying to become parents before they had even finished becoming adults themselves.

At the plaintiff’s table sat Jasmine Rivera, 22, one hand on her pregnant belly, the other wiping tears she kept trying—and failing—to hide. Across from her sat Tyler Brooks

, 24, foot tapping, fists clenched, looking equal parts defensive and overwhelmed.

Judge Nadine Fletcher entered, immediately scanning their faces before opening the file.

“Ms. Rivera,” she began gently, “you’re petitioning for temporary separation, financial support, and counseling. Explain why.”

Jasmine inhaled shakily.
“Your Honor… I’m seven months pregnant. And instead of preparing for our baby, Tyler and I fight every single day. About trust. About responsibility. About everything.”

Tyler muttered, “Because you treat me like a child.”

Jasmine snapped her head toward him.
“Because you ACT like one!”

Judge Fletcher banged her gavel lightly.
“One person at a time.”

Jasmine steadied herself.
“I’m scared, Your Honor. I’m scared to raise a baby with someone I can’t trust. He goes out late. He disappears for hours. He ignores my calls. And when I ask where he’s been—”

Her voice cracked.
“He gets mad at me for asking.”

Tyler sat up straighter.
“Because she blows up my phone! Twenty texts in a row! I can’t breathe.”

Jasmine turned to him, tears spilling.
“I blow up your phone because I’m HOME ALONE carrying YOUR baby wondering why you keep disappearing!”

Judge Fletcher raised a hand.
“Mr. Brooks, what is it you think she wants from you?”

Tyler exhaled sharply.
“Control. She wants to control everything—how I talk, where I go, who I’m friends with. She even took my gaming console away last week!”

The courtroom buzzed.

Jasmine’s jaw dropped.
“I took it away because you used it for EIGHT HOURS STRAIGHT and ignored me when my doctor called!”

Even Judge Fletcher widened her eyes.

Tyler threw his hands up.
“It was ONE DAY.”

“It was EVERY day,” Jasmine shot back. “Every! Single! Day!”

Judge Fletcher leaned forward.
“Mr. Brooks… your partner is pregnant. Her needs are going to outweigh your need to play online games.”

Tyler shifted uncomfortably.
“I know. It’s just… everything’s happening too fast. I’m trying. I swear I’m trying.”

Jasmine’s voice lowered, fragile:
“I don’t need perfect. I don’t need a superhero. I just need you to show up.”

Tyler dropped his gaze.

Judge Fletcher turned the page in the file.
“Ms. Rivera also claims you refused to attend parenting classes and skipped two prenatal appointments.”

Tyler rubbed his face.
“I didn’t skip them on purpose! I panicked. I… I don’t know how to be a dad. I never had one. And every time she talks about car seats or schedules or feeding plans, I…I feel like I’m failing before I even start.”

Jasmine blinked, surprised.
“Why didn’t you tell me that?”

He shrugged, voice cracking.
“Because you already think I’m not ready.”

The room went silent.

Judge Fletcher softened her tone.
“You two are not broken. You’re scared. Both of you. But fear can turn into anger if you don’t talk to each other.”

She set the file aside.

“My ruling: temporary counseling for both parties. Financial support ordered. Prenatal classes required for Mr. Brooks. You will attend every appointment moving forward.”

Tyler nodded slowly.

Jasmine wiped her cheeks.

Judge Fletcher ended with a steady, hopeful tone:
“You are expecting a child, not fighting an enemy. Fix the communication, and the parenting will follow.”

The gavel fell.

Jasmine and Tyler exchanged a long, fragile look—hurt, fear, hope all tangled together.

Their fight wasn’t over.
But neither, it seemed, was their family.
