“You told him the baby wasn’t his — now you’re denying it. No wonder this entire relationship is breaking apart.”
The words echoed through the small courtroom like a slap, sharp enough to make Eva flinch as if she’d been hit. She clutched the edge of the table, her knuckles turning white, her breathing shallow and uneven.
Across from her, Tyler shook his head in disbelief. His eyes weren’t angry anymore — just tired. Tired in a way that made it clear he’d run out of strength months ago.
“You said it yourself,” he whispered, voice trembling but controlled. “You told me the baby wasn’t mine. You told him the same thing. And now you’re standing here pretending you never said it. How are we supposed to build anything on that?”
Eva wiped her tears, but her hands shook too hard to stop them from falling. “I was confused. I didn’t know what to think. I was scared—”
“You were caught,” Tyler cut in. “That’s what you were.”
She opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
In the back of the courtroom, Miguel sat with his hands clasped tightly, staring down at the floor. He looked like a man praying for a miracle he knew wouldn’t come.
Judge Morales leaned forward. “Let’s keep this focused on the facts. Ms. Dalton, did you or did you not tell Mr. Reyes that the baby could be his?”
Eva’s stomach twisted. The truth weighed heavy on her tongue.
“I… I told him I wasn’t sure,” she whispered.
Tyler’s laugh was broken and bitter. “Not sure? Eva, you told me point blank that the baby wasn’t mine. You said it during a fight, then again when I asked you to be honest. You said you knew the timing didn’t line up.”
“That was before—”
“Before you realized what you were losing,” Tyler finished for her.
Eva felt her world collapse a little more. She tried to steady her voice. “I was overwhelmed. Everything happened so fast. I didn’t know who to trust… not even myself.”
“That’s not good enough,” Tyler said softly. And the softness hurt more than shouting ever could. “You don’t get to play confused when the truth isn’t convenient.”
Miguel finally looked up, his voice low and strained. “Eva… why didn’t you just tell us the same thing? One truth. Not two different stories.”
Eva’s face crumpled. “Because I didn’t want to lose either of you.”
Silence fell — heavy, suffocating.
Tyler stared at her like he was looking at a stranger. “You lost us both,” he said quietly. “It didn’t have to be this way, but you made it impossible.”
Eva’s tears came harder. “I never meant to hurt you. I swear on my life, I never meant for any of this—”
Judge Morales held up her hand. “We’re beyond intentions. We’re here for answers.”
She lifted the sealed envelope — the one holding the truth neither man could walk away from.
“This DNA result,” the judge said, “is the only clarity this situation has left.”
Eva’s heartbeat hammered inside her chest. Tyler’s breath caught. Miguel closed his eyes again.
The envelope tore open with a soft rip that felt unbearably loud.
Judge Morales read silently for a moment before lifting her eyes.
“The probability of paternity is—”
Eva’s legs went weak. She gripped the table to stay standing.
Because she knew, right then, that no matter what number followed…
the damage was already done.
