Judge Caprio Questions Motorist Who Was “Whacked” Twice in One Night

In an amusing turn of events at Providence Municipal Court, Donald D. Benedetto found himself facing the judge after receiving two parking tickets on the same street in a single night. The case, which could have been an ordinary parking violation, was lightened by a dose of humor and a thoughtful decision from Judge Caprio.

Mr. Benedetto was initially cited for two separate parking violations—one at 9:20 AM and another at 11:00 PM—both of which occurred on the same street. Although many would have viewed the situation as a straightforward matter, Benedetto’s explanation for his actions added an element of charm to the hearing.

According to Benedetto, he had parked overnight in front of a popular spot, the “Hot Club,” and had managed to get “whacked twice” by the parking tickets. His playful description of being “whacked” drew some laughter in the courtroom and set the stage for a light-hearted exchange.

He emphasized his clean driving record and explained that he was hoping the judge would take it into account when considering his fate. He pointed out that his record had always been impeccable, and his hope was to reduce the financial impact of the fines.

Judge Caprio, known for his wit and sense of humor, took this opportunity to engage in a bit of fun with Benedetto. He asked Benedetto what he meant by “whacked,” to which Benedetto replied that it was a humorous way of saying he got hit with two parking tickets.

This prompted Inspector Quinn to join in the banter, explaining that in police jargon, “whacked” simply referred to being issued a parking ticket. He clarified that in the language of law enforcement, it wasn’t a violent term but rather a humorous reference to receiving a fine.

Judge Caprio, however, wasn’t about to let the word “whacked” pass without a punchline of his own. He quickly quipped that in his neighborhood, “whacked” meant something entirely different. In Federal Hill, where Caprio hails from, the term could carry a far more serious connotation—one that might leave a person unable to stand.

This caused the courtroom to erupt with laughter, as the playful exchange demonstrated Judge Caprio’s trademark ability to keep the mood light, even in the midst of legal proceedings.

After the humor settled, Judge Caprio focused on the matter at hand and issued his ruling. Given Benedetto’s clean driving record and his genuine explanation for the violations, Caprio decided to reduce the fines, offering Benedetto a less severe penalty.

Instead of the total fines for two violations, which would have amounted to a more substantial sum, Benedetto would only have to pay $50 for both tickets.

Caprio’s decision reflected his typical approach to cases that present a mix of humor and reason. By considering Benedetto’s history as a responsible driver and understanding the circumstances surrounding the incident, the judge was able to balance justice with compassion.

As the hearing concluded, Benedetto left the courtroom feeling lighter, both in terms of the reduced fine and the enjoyable exchange he had shared with the judge and Inspector Quinn. The case, though rooted in a minor infraction, had provided the courtroom with a moment of levity and reminded all present of the human side of legal proceedings.

In the end, Benedetto walked away with a fine that was far more manageable than initially expected, and everyone in the courtroom left with a smile, thanks to the wit of Judge Caprio and the good-natured interaction with the defendant.
