NFL free agent and former Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander.
For the second time this season, a veteran defensive player has shocked the Philadelphia Eagles by stepping away from the team.
This time, it was a player who had yet to play a game for the Eagles — 2-time NFL All-Pro and 2-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander — after they obtained him in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens on November 2.
“Former Pro Bowl CB Jaire Alexander has decided to step away from football to try to focus on getting himself right physically and mentally before deciding on his future,” Fox Sports NFL reporter Jay Glazer wrote on his official X account on Tuesday, November 11. “Alexander informed the Eagles of his decision today.”
On October 13, veteran edge rusher Za’Darius Smith went on Instagram to announce his sudden retirement just one month after signing a 1-year, $4.25 million contract with the Eagles.
Smith, 33 years old, played in 5 games with the Eagles, with 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
“I’m told Jaire is contemplating retirement but for now is stepping away to think through his next steps,” The Athetic’s Diana Russini wrote on her official X account. “Sources tell me and Mike Silver the Eagles have kept conversations private over the last few days.”
Alexander was the third cornerback the Eagles have traded for this season following deals for Jakorian Bennett and Michael Carter II, but it was Alexander who seemed to have the highest upside of the 3.
He also had the highest unpredictability factor. Alexander was a first round pick (No. 18 overall) by the Green Bay Packers in the 2018 NFL draft and was one of the NFL’s dominant cornerbacks for the first part of his career, earning NFL All-Pro honors in 2020 and 2022.
Alexander, who signed a whopping 4-year, $84 million contract extension in May 2022 which included a $30 million signing bonus, has seen his career defined by odd behavior and injuries as much as by his prodigious talent.
Since 2021, Alexander has missed 33 regular season games due to injuries or suspension, including only playing 4 games in 2021 and 7 games each in 2023 and 2024.
In one bizarre incident, Alexander was suspended for 1 game for conduct detrimental to the team after he appointed himself a team captain for a road game against the Carolina Panthers because the game was close to his hometown — something Green Bay’s coaches had no idea was happening.
Alexander went so far as to call the coin toss, won it, and incorrectly asked for the Packers to be on defense first — meaning they would have kicked off both halves — but since he wasn’t actually a team captain he was overruled.
On November 7, Alexander said the transition to the Eagles was “easy” during a conversation with Philadelphia media and denied it was any sort of physical issues which held him back in Baltimore, where he signed a 1-year, $4.5 million contract for 2025.
The Eagles are 7-2 and trying to win a second consecutive Super Bowl.
“It’s like being in a new school, getting to know everybody,” Alexander said in a video posted to YouTube. “This is amazing … dream come true (being with Eagles).”
The NFL world has erupted in chaos following one of the boldest statements ever made on live television. During a recent post-game discussion, veteran sportscaster
“Is it time for America to move on from Patrick Mahomes?”
Moments later, she doubled down by calling
“It wasn’t meant to disrespect Mahomes,” Andrews later clarified, “but it’s time we talk about what’s really happening on the field. The league is changing, and Dak Prescott is part of that change.”
The statement came after a disappointing performance by Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in their loss to the Cowboys. Analysts had already been questioning whether the Chiefs’ dynasty was beginning to crack, but Andrews’ comment poured gasoline on the fire. Within minutes, hashtags like
Supporters of Mahomes were quick to defend him, highlighting his two Super Bowl victories and record-breaking achievements. “You don’t just move on from the best player in football,” one fan wrote. Others, however, agreed with Andrews, arguing that Mahomes’ recent struggles show he’s no longer untouchable.
“Dak Prescott is fearless, efficient, and brings a fresh energy to the league,” Andrews said later in the broadcast. “This isn’t about disrespect — it’s about recognizing who’s leading the new generation.”
The controversy didn’t end there. Several analysts on the panel reportedly tried to steer the conversation away, but the clip had already gone viral. Sports talk shows replayed the moment repeatedly, with some calling it
Former players also weighed in. Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe tweeted, “Respect to Erin, but you don’t replace greatness just because someone’s having a rough month. Mahomes is still HIM.” Meanwhile, retired quarterback
The debate has since evolved beyond football performance and into a cultural discussion about legacy, hype, and the media’s role in shaping public perception. Some critics accused Andrews of intentionally sparking controversy to drive ratings, while others praised her for “saying what everyone else was thinking.”
Inside NFL circles, the reaction was reportedly mixed. Sources close to the Chiefs said Mahomes was “aware” of the comment but refused to engage publicly, focusing instead on preparing for next week’s matchup. The Cowboys organization, on the other hand, reportedly viewed the statement as validation of Prescott’s leadership and rise to stardom.
Dak Prescott himself responded humbly when asked about the viral moment during a post-practice interview:
“I appreciate the kind words,” Prescott said. “But I’m just focused on playing my game and helping my team win. Patrick Mahomes is one of the best ever — there’s no replacing a player like that.”
Despite his modesty, the internet has already dubbed this debate the “Quarterback Crown War.” Fans and analysts are now framing every upcoming Chiefs-Cowboys matchup as a symbolic battle between the old guard and the new face of the league.
As of now, neither ESPN nor Fox Sports has issued an official statement regarding Andrews’ comments. Still, the moment has cemented itself as one of the most memorable live-television exchanges in recent NFL history. Whether you view it as bold truth-telling or unnecessary provocation, Erin Andrews has undeniably reignited a nationwide conversation about what greatness means — and who defines it.
With the NFL season heating up and the Chiefs under growing pressure, all eyes are now on Patrick Mahomes. Can he silence the critics and remind the world why he’s considered the face of modern football? Or has Erin Andrews’ declaration marked the beginning of a new chapter in NFL history — one where Dak Prescott becomes the symbol of a changing era?
Whatever the answer, one thing is certain: Erin Andrews has set the football world on fire, and this debate isn’t cooling down anytime soon.
