First 2028 Democrat Announces They Are Not Running For President

Several top Democrats, such as former Vice President Kamala Harris, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, are all expected to run for president in 2028.

But one young, up-and-coming figure says he is not planning to jump into the race, CNN noted.

Maryland Democratic Gov. Wes Moore says he will not run for president in 2028, despite being frequently touted among Democrats as a prospective presidential contender.

That hasn’t prevented continuous speculation about his future political aspirations, especially since he continues to make engagements outside of Maryland, which boost his national image. On Friday, he will fly to South Carolina, an early presidential primary state, to speak at the Blue Palmetto Dinner.

When questioned about 2028, the governor was straightforward.

“I’m not running,” Moore told The Associated Press in an interview. He also said, when asked, that he isn’t trying to get his name in the conversation for a potential vice presidential candidacy, either.

Moore downplayed his high-profile trips to battleground states, including a recent trip to South Carolina.

“And people should get very used to me going all over the country bringing business back to Maryland, because that’s exactly what I plan on doing as long as I’m the governor of the state,” Moore said after a dedication in Annapolis for a memorial to former Rep. Parren Mitchell.

Moore, who is in the third year of his first term, expects to compete for reelection in predominantly Democratic Maryland next year. He said becoming the state’s governor during a difficult period requires his whole attention.

Another name continues to be floated as making early moves before 2028: Pete Buttigieg.

Buttigieg continues to force his way into the digital media sphere, defying traditional Democratic standards as talk of a presidential run grows.

The former secretary came to Washington this week to attend an event with Democratic content producers and make some media appearances, as talk mounts about a 2028 presidential run following Buttigieg’s revelation that he will not compete for the open Michigan Senate or gubernatorial seat.

Buttigieg spoke with the Washington Examiner about his views on new media, how to engage people who do not identify with established parties, the current political landscape, and what he is doing to assure the success of his party after leaving the Biden administration.

“I’m using my voice best I can in traditional media and new media, and I’m going to continue having conversations with neighbors, with voters, talking about how we could have a better way,” Buttigieg told the Washington Examiner. “I don’t know what that means for me, politically or professionally, a long way from making any decisions about that, but I know that’s what I need to be doing right now.”

Ezra Klein of the New York Times labeled Buttigieg the “Democratic Party’s acknowledged best-of-class communicator” last year, just weeks before the Democrats suffered a severe defeat in November.

Throughout the 2024 presidential campaign, President Donald Trump made several visits on podcasts and forums popular among young people, one of which being Joe Rogan’s podcast.

“It’s certainly shadow primary season. Pete’s strategy so far is on point,” influencer and CEO of Girl and the Gov Sammy Kanter told the Washington Examiner.

“He’s going on podcasts, and with that, he’s meeting Americans where they are on both sides of the aisle. He’s interacting with creators and taking the online sphere in a serious manner, as it should be. And he’s excelling in that space because he is able to explain complex happenings in an approachable way,” Kanter continued.

In April, Buttigieg cleared the path for a 2028 presidential campaign after announcing that he would not run for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat.

The Justice Department announced that it has charged 14 members of an “extensive alien smuggling organization,” while eight other people were also arrested for smuggling hundreds of illegal migrants into the U.S.

A grand jury in Las Cruces, New Mexico, returned an indictment against 14 individuals for conspiracy to transport, harbor, and bring illegal aliens into the United States. According to a DOJ press release, eight of those charged were arrested.

“Today’s indictment alleges that the defendants engaged in a sophisticated conspiracy to smuggle aliens into and throughout the United States at great danger to the aliens, resulting in the death of one person,” said Supervisory Official Antoinette T. Bacon of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.

“The Justice Department worked with our partners at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to dismantle an alien smuggling organization based in Mexico that has allegedly smuggled hundreds of illegal aliens, including unaccompanied children, through New Mexico and South Texas,” Bacon continued.

“We are committed to eliminating transnational alien smuggling organizations that exploit migrants purely for profit and undermine our national security.”According to the indictment, the defendants were involved in a conspiracy to unlawfully bring undocumented individuals from Mexico into the United States via the southern border. The indictment claims that the defendants also facilitated the transportation of these individuals within the U.S. and concealed them in “stash houses” along the route, said the press release.

In some instances, the defendants allegedly evaded law enforcement by driving at high speeds and advising the undocumented individuals on how to flee from U.S. Border Patrol and bypass checkpoints. The indictment further alleges that one undocumented individual died from heat exposure during a smuggling attempt and was abandoned in the desert, the DOJ added.

“Human smuggling organizations threaten our national security and exploit vulnerable individuals for profit, putting their lives at risk and undermining public safety,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Holland S. Kastrin for the District of New Mexico.

“The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of New Mexico is committed to continuing to work with our federal, state and local partners to dismantle transnational human smuggling organizations, hold their leaders accountable, and seize the illicit proceeds generated by these exploitative enterprises,” Kastrin continued.

The arrests come following a series of executive orders signed by President Donald Trump ordering reversals of nearly all of the Biden-Harris immigration and border policies that essentially created an “open border” situation for most of their four-year term.

During the last administration, it is estimated that nearly 8 million people were detected crossing illegally into the U.S. under Biden-Harris.

“We are appreciative of our brave law enforcement partners for their continued vigilance in investigating and apprehending members of transnational criminal organizations who conspire to undermine our nation’s immigration laws for their profit, with a callous and reckless disregard for the sanctity of life,” said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations (ICE HSI) El Paso Special Agent in Charge Jason T. Stevens.

“As this case sadly demonstrates, human smuggling is a crime that takes lives and puts the public at risk. ICE HSI is passionately devoted to using its abundant authority to identify, investigate, and arrest criminals who prey on the vulnerabilities of people they treat as human cargo,” Stevens noted further, per the DOJ press release.

Each defendant is charged with conspiracy to bring, transport, and harbor illegal aliens in the United States. If convicted, they face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.A federal district court judge will determine the final sentence, taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors, the DOJ added in its press release.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer delivered a fiery critique on Wednesday of the Republican-backed “One Big Beautiful Bill” (BBB), accusing the GOP of disguising the legislation’s true costs to the American public.

Schumer claimed the bill, championed by former President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers, would jeopardize health care for millions and slash vital assistance programs, while rewarding the wealthiest Americans with major tax breaks.

During his remarks, Schumer argued that the legislation should be renamed the “We’re All Going To Die Act.” He said the measure could:

Strip health insurance from roughly

Cut food assistance for 11 million people

Fund tax reductions that disproportionately benefit billionaires

“This isn’t a bill for working families,” Schumer said. “It’s a bill that takes from those who need help the most and gives to those who already have more than enough.”

Republicans and conservative commentators quickly dismissed Schumer’s remarks as exaggerated fearmongering.

Some noted that Democrats have often warned of catastrophic outcomes from GOP-backed legislation, from the repeal of net neutrality to tax reforms and border security measures — predictions that critics say never came true.

On social media, reactions were sharp:

“I think I’ve already ‘died’ a dozen times, according to these warnings,” one user joked.

Others pointed out that constant claims of disaster may weaken Democrats’ credibility, saying the rhetoric has “lost its emotional impact.”

The clash over the “Big Beautiful Bill” highlights the deep divide between Republicans, who frame the legislation as a pro-growth, pro-business package, and Democrats, who argue it comes at the expense of vulnerable Americans.

As the debate unfolds, both parties appear ready to lean into their respective narratives — Republicans emphasizing economic opportunity, and Democrats warning of dire human costs.
