Penguins take over Stockholm

Penguins take over Stockholm

One of the only negative storylines surrounding the otherwise impressive Pittsburgh Penguins this season has been the team’s (and more specifically, goalie Arturs Silovs’) play in the shootout. The Penguins are 0-3 in the shooting contest this year, but even with Silovs’ poor play for the extra point, this has been an ongoing issue for several seasons.

This weekend’s NHL Global Series games between the Penguins and the Nashville Predators will mark Pittsburgh’s fifth time the franchise has headed overseas for a regular-season game. The game will also mark the third time Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang are taking the ice for NHL action in Sweden. Take a look back at the last time the Penguins played overseas during an October 2008 trip to Stockholm.

Speaking of the upcoming Sweden series, the Penguins team reporter, Michelle Crechiolo, has been able to capture some of the early moments and festivities that the players have been participating in.

With the NHL Penguins on a break until Friday, now’s the best time to get the latest stock reports from the youngsters across the Penguins’ organization.

Here’s the latest update surrounding the main Olympic hockey rink in Milan, Italy, which has fallen behind schedule. NHL senior director of facilities operations/hockey operations Derek King and executive vice-president for NHL events Dean Matsuzaki are headed to Milan after this week’s games in Sweden to take stock.

Another surprising development across the NHL early on this season? The 11-3-1 Anaheim Ducks. It appears the young squad has “bought into” whatever new head coach Joel Quenneville is selling them.

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Charles Alexis Legault will miss the next three to four months after having surgery to repair multiple torn extensor tendons in his right hand.

We got injury updates on Frank Nazar and Jason Dickinson yesterday. Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs might be missing their best player when they come to town.

The Chicago Blackhawks are back at the United Center tonight as they host the Eastern Conference-leading New Jersey Devils. Check back in this afternoon for a complete game preview and again late tonight for postgame analysis. Until then, here are some fresh Morning Chirps to hold you over.
