John Morton Remains Focused on Helping Lions, Despite Losing Playcalling Duties

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator John Morton recently spoke to the media after being relieved of his playcalling duties following a tough stretch for the team. Despite the change, Morton remains fully committed to the team’s success, offering a level-headed perspective on the situation.

“I’m not going to say exactly how everything went down because that’s private, but I fully support it. Listen, I’ve been doing this for a while. I’ve worked with head coaches who are offensive-minded, play callers, so I’m used to it.”

Rather than sulking, Morton took the change in stride, acknowledging that the ultimate goal is for the Lions to win games. He expressed his understanding that this was part of his responsibility to the team and that he was always willing to do whatever it takes to help them succeed.

Morton’s career has seen highs and lows, including being fired multiple times, but he remains focused on the bigger picture. He made it clear that his role hadn’t changed much aside from not calling plays on game day.

“The goal isn’t about me or any personal objectives. The end goal is a Super Bowl championship,” Morton explained. “So, I didn’t even blink because I know my role here. The only thing that changes is who’s calling the plays on game day; everything else stays the same.”

For Morton, his experience working under renowned head coaches Jon Gruden and Sean Payton has shaped how he approaches the job. Both coaches instilled in him the importance of being prepared and pushing through difficult moments, no matter the circumstances.

“That’s how I approach every game. I’ve helped Coach Payton on game days, and I’ve helped Coach Gruden on game days. I’ve always approached it with the mindset of being a coordinator. So, I think that’s helped me, and I’ll continue to do the same.”

Despite the setbacks, Morton remains optimistic about the Lions’ future and his role in helping them achieve success. If head coach Dan Campbell ever decides to turn to Morton again for playcalling duties, he’s ready and willing to step up.

“I just want to win. I’ll do whatever it takes to help this team win. I know my role, and I’ll be ready if he asks me to take the reins again.”

Morton’s professional attitude and dedication to the Lions are clear, and his approach reflects the team-first mentality that will be crucial as Detroit continues its push to find success this season.

ST. PAUL, Minn – Before its game against the San Jose Sharks (7-6-3) the Minnesota Wild (7-7-3) recalled defenseman David Spacek from the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Spacek, 22, was a fifth round pick by the Wild from the 2022 NHL Draft. He has played in 145 games with the Iowa Wild in parts of three seasons. He has recorded seven goals, 42 assists and 49 points.

The 6-foot defender has six assists in 12 games this season for Iowa. With Jake Middleton sick, adding Spacek will provide the Wild with a seventh defenseman incase someone can’t play tonight.
